The Missouri Alliance for Arts Education is a non-profit arts education service organization comprised of the statewide arts education organizations, private citizens, and businesses that works to help Missouri's students receive high quality arts education at every level.

Collaborative Action Campaign

MAAE has joined a united effort utilizing National Association for Music Education's voter voice platform to give our constituents an opportunity to make their voices heard.

This three-part action campaign is addressed to:
  1. encourage Missouri state legislators to support education in future budgets
  2. encourage US Congress to appropriate COVID relief funds in support of education
  3. encourage Missouri's governor to release withheld funds

What a great time for local advocacy! Your local building principals are encountering unprecedented challenges and stressors. Consider asking students to help celebrate and build positive relationships with local education leaders. A short message of appreciation, celebration or encouragement is always welcome!

Bicentennial Poster Contest - entry deadline 10/31/20

Celebrating Missouri's 200th Anniversary of statehood the Bicentennial Commission announces a poster contest is open for students in grades 3-12. We are pleased to share links to more info and at-home friendly lesson ideas to help students of varying grade levels become inspired to create their own poster by looking back at the poster from 100 years ago which celebrated Missouri's first 100 years in 1921. MAAE Arts Integration HELP WANTED!

SEEKING EDUCATION PARTNERS! MAAE has developed a tool which may be of use to arts integration practitioners as they collaborate with others in designing lessons and units of instruction. We are looking for some teachers in both arts and non-arts subjects in the same school who might want to team up and try out some new ideas. MAAE Listening Sessions Report

MAAE has just completed its first research project. The report is currently under revision. Reaffirming our mission to promote high quality arts education for the benefit ALL Missourians, the RIDE committee is working to eliminate elements of systemic racism or bias which our present in our collective work. Congratulations Matthew Ketteman

Finalist for Missouri Teacher of the Year

Vocal Music teacher at Longview Farm Elementary Lee's Summit R-VII School District, Matthew Ketteman has been selected as a finalist for the 2021 Missouri Teacher of the Year.

This is Missouri's highest honor recognizing excellence in education. We are very proud of Matthew! Congratulations!

STAM Conference and Honorees

Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri held their annual conference (virtually) on September 24-25, 2020. MAAE helped sponsor their keynote speaker, Dr. Phil Woodmore. Two of MAAE's own were honored. MAAE Director Aaron Money received the Outstanding Administrator Award and MAAE Director Teri Turner received the Lauren Reid Founder Service Award. Congratulations!

Visual Art Educators Fall Conference held

The MAEA Virtual Fall Conference was held on Oct 2-3. Registrants were able to attend free of charge. The conference featured many pre-recorded workshops - still available for MAEA members on our Educate.Today site, and additional content on Facebook @maeaarteducator. The event included Keynote Speaker, Dr. Sarah Cress Ackerman.

MISSOURI ART NOW

Missouri Art Now is a statewide competition for visual artists who live and work in Missouri. To celebrate Missouri’s bicentennial, several arts organizations have come together to present a traveling exhibit throughout 2021. The exhibition will feature sixty works from artists throughout the State of Missouri, together demonstrating the vibrant visual arts culture in the state. TOURING VENUES: The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau; The State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia; Post Art Library/ Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin; Hannibal Arts Council in Hannibal; and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in Saint Joseph.

Assessment Summit

On October 26 at 9am EDT (8am Central), the World Alliance for Arts Education and its partners - the University of Florida, the State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education, and Creative Generation - hosts a seminar to examine the structures, processes, and practices, which may lead our field towards a new reality of arts assessment and program evaluation. The Young & Emerging Leaders Forum

On October 27 at 2pm EDT (1pm Central), the WAAE hosts the Young & Emerging Leaders Forum where young scholars, emerging leaders, and new colleagues to the field of arts ed can share, network, and develop a community of learning to broaden the leadership pipeline in the field of arts and cultural education. Bill of Rights Contest

The United States Courts of Appeals along with the United States District Courts in the Seventh and Eighth Circuits are hosting a Bill of Rights contest and we want YOU to be a part of it!

School aged children in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are encouraged to submit an essay, poem, video, photograph, song, or piece of art on the importance of the Bill of Rights. Be as creative as you like! Please limit essays to no more than 500 words, and videos to 3-5 minutes or less. Prizes will be awarded. Submissions will be accepted Thursday, October 1, through 5:00pm on Saturday, October 31.

Flat Stanley Virtual Field Trips

Gateway Center for Performing Art’s Theatre for Young Artists by Young Artists Program (TYAYA) is designed to make high quality performances by St. Louis youth available to schools. During this time of social distancing, TYAYA productions are fully virtual Zoom-sicals available for in-person or virtual classrooms. Productions are professionally produced and directed but cast with actors ages 10-18 from the St. Louis area and performed from the safety of home.

"Flat Stanley" is designed for students in Grades K-5. Programs can be tailored to a variety of ages and focused on the literary aspects of the story or the artistic aspects of presenting a virtual production. The 60-minute ZOOM program includes a pre-show discussion about the story and virtual theatre a 25-30 minute performance, and a brief “talk back” session with actors from the production.

New Teacher Mentor Help

MAAE wants Missouri's arts teachers to succeed. We will happily help connect teachers new to the profession with an experienced mentor to help ensure that success. Annual Senate Art Hall Exhibit Contest

Deadline for submissions - November 20, 2020.

Co-Sponsored by MAEA and MAAE we celebrate excellence in student work exhibited in the hallway outside the Senate chambers. One entry is selected for each Senate district. (37 pieces of art statewide.) Student work is submitted by the teacher, and submitted to each senator for the final selection process. NOT just for visual artists! We welcome both 2-D and video submissions from any teacher from any arts discipline. >Learn more here.

Show-Me Arts (SMarts) Student Advocacy Summit

Training the next generation of arts advocates, the SHOW-ME Arts program (SMarts) provides information, training and role-playing activities for students - who then apply those skills by meeting with their legislators.

With social distancing and travel restrictions, plans are in the works to host regional training sessions in YOUR area. Stay tuned for more details. We'd love to work with you and your students!

Plan to join us for MAAE's Fine Arts Education Day at the Missouri State Capitol to highlight the importance of fine arts education in Missouri schools. In our COVID-19 world, we imagine there will be opportunities for remote visits, or sharing of video recordings to help us make connections between the arts and Missouri's legislators. We also have hopes for live performances if safety guidelines permit. Consider participating and STAY TUNED as our plans develop. We'd love to have you involved.
