PD 4 Arts Ed
Missouri's statewide arts education organizations do a great job of providing opportunities for professional development through their conferences and workshops, but there is also need for content-specific PD throughout the year. MAAE is providing a service to assist in local PD planning.
We particularly want to make the rich resources generated within the last year from practicing arts educators and our non-profit arts organization partners more widely available to arts educators. MAAE is compiling a list of professional development resources. The published compilation may be accessed through the MAAE newsletter and on the MAAE website.
If you have professional development opportunities to offer, please submit separate entries for each learning option you have to offer. Submission form here!
Both live, in-person, virtual and pre-recorded asynchronous content is welcome.
MAAE continues to collect your videos to help tell your story and share the good news about arts ed in Missouri. The form is open to receive your videos for the virtual component of our Fine Arts Education Day '22. Interested in performing live and in-person at the Capitol on March 23, 2022? email director@moaae.org.
Sending powerful messages to stakeholders that the arts are not only alive and well in Missouri schools, but a vital part of our collective social and economic recovery happens when YOU share what you and your arts learners are doing! Links to COCA dance and Willard South Elementary are at left. View other collected videos at https://maae.educate.today/.

MAAE helps support exceptional professional learning opportunities sponsored by statewide arts education organizations thanks to the funding support from the Missouri Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Francis Family Foundation.
Missouri Choral Directors Association held their first conference since 2019 in Springfield at the University Plaza Hotel, July 20-23, 2021. Alongside conference planners, and gifted presenters, Incredible sessions, community and connection, MAAE helped sponsor keynote speaker Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, educator, conductor, clinician and Assistant professor of St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He is also co-editor of the Justice Choir Songbook, a new collection of songs for the issues of our time, which is focused on encouraging communities to raise their voices together for change, equity, love, and peace.
Missouri Bandmasters Association gathered at Margaritaville (Tan-Tar-A) Resort on June 20-22, 2021. Powerful learning sessions, family activities and opportunities for community and connection brought Missouri's Bandmasters together to not only learn, but reflect and recover from a daunting year in education. MAAE helped sponsor Clinicians Dr. Eric Wilson and Lynette Wilson who helped attendees gain Psychological Tools for Well Being in a two-part session on Mental Health Awareness. The Wilsons are uniquely qualified to provide this type of support, since Eric - as a collegiate level bandmaster and Lynette with a counseling and psychology background, they shared insights into ways of bringing balance into the lives of busy band directors and their families.
Rather than a concentrated in-person conference, the Missouri Dance Organization sponsored a series of virtual workshops throughout the spring. These included: Footprints of a Tap Dancer with Christ Rutledge on May 19, Dance Career Exploration on June 26, and Dance and Social Justice - How to navigate Histories of Oppression with Adam W. McKinney. MAAE was pleased to help bring these presenters to an audience of dance educators in Missouri.
The Kansas/Missouri Partners in Education Summer Symposium was held on July 26-27 virtually. With both hands-on activities and breakout sessions in small groups, participants increased their artistic literacy and gained ready-to-use strategies and activities in working with students. Congratulations to the symposium planners.
The Springfield Regional Arts Integration Conference 2021 was also a success. Held on July 29-30 in person. A keynote address was delivered by Roger Kelley, fine arts curriculum director for Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This was followed by two days of professional learning for teachers.
Sessions for both Arts Integration Professional Development conferences were led by Focus 5, Inc. professional learning consultants and arts integration specialists. MAAE is proud to support and promote this important work which has such far reaching benefits for teaching and learning.

200 years of Statehood 1821-2021
MAAE partners with MCDA for Bicentennial Commission's Statehood Day
When the Bicentennial Commission plans included a choir to sing for the opening ceremonies for Statehood Day on August 10, 2021, the Missouri Choral Director's Association (MCDA) answered the call. The selected members of the Missouri All-State Honor Choir were unable to perform as scheduled in January 2021, but 160 of them united in July, 2021 as part of the Festival Honors Choir as part of the MCDA Summer Professional Development Conference. Over seventy of those singers agreed to join in the festivities celebrating our state's 200th anniversary in Jefferson City, Missouri on August 10. Selected repertoire features composers and arrangers with a connection to Missouri. Special thanks to MAAE chair, Jeff Sandquist, for coordinating this event.
Other Missouri Bicentennial Statehood Day Events
The Missouri Bicentennial Commission is sponsoring a series of events this summer to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Missouri Statehood. On Aug. 10, Missouri will reach 200 years since it became the 24th state to enter the union. As the state’s bicentennial rapidly approaches, many Missourians are gearing up to celebrate.
Together for ’21 Fest will be held Aug. 6-8 on the University of Missouri campus and Center for Missouri Studies in Columbia. The free, three-day festival will include music, folk arts demonstrations, talks, film screenings, exhibitions and a virtual reality gallery tour of a collection of 98 works of art from the mid-1940s titled Missouri Heart of the Nation. All registrants will be entered into a drawing for ten $100 value prize packets..
First Missouri State Capitol in St. Charles will be commemorating the bicentennial on Aug. 7. Visitors can tour the historic rooms where statehood began, attend lectures, and walk the stationary parade route and more. The event is being organized by Missouri State Parks.
Missourians are invited to Jefferson City for Statehood Day on Aug. 10. The day begins at the State Capitol with the formal recognition of the Missouri Bicentennial; reveal of the Missouri Bicentennial stamp; bicentennial-themed exhibits in the Capitol, including the Bicentennial Quilt and the My Missouri 2021 photograph display. In addition, there will be U.S. Naturalization Ceremony in the morning and a statewide ice cream social is planned in the afternoon at the Capitol and in communities across the state.
Our Missouri Celebration is the theme for this year’s Missouri State Fair. Special exhibits to commemorate statehood, along with livestock shows, concerts, motorsport events, and more are being offered to visitors who attend the fair. As part of the CARES act, a fund for Elementary & Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) was established. For Missouri, the total in ESSER relief exceeded $1.7 billion. The funding has been delivered thus far in segments with ESSER I, and ESSER II already in progress. Plans for how individual districts will spend their federal ESSER III dollars are due to Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education by August 23, 2021. There has never been a better time to approach your local leadership team and advocate that a portion of the funds be spent on the arts program. More information about allowable expenses, and links to learning exactly how much was allocated to your district may be found on our website, under "ADVOCACY" and "ESSER FUND SUPPORT". There are tools developed by national arts ed organization (NAFME, NDEO, NAEA, EDTA) there as well. Of special note is an adaptable and interactive spreadsheet (from "Be a Part of the Music) that can help you communicate with decision makers, information about COVID impact on your program, including changes in enrollment, and fundraising impact.
Please don't let this opportunity pass you by! There is a chance, that even if your district has already made decisions, there may be funds available at a later time. Then your request might move closer to the top of the list!
In December 2020-January 2021, MAAE conducted a survey of arts educators measuring the impact of the pandemic on teaching and learning in their school. The results have compiled and a one-page summary report and full detailed report are now available for review. 100 respondents from across the state shared their views and insight.
MAAE recognizes the extraordinary efforts made by all educators, and arts educators in particular. With uncertainty about the allocation of local resources - specifically time and funding - on the horizon, MAAE is making plans to provide local advocacy resource materials for you to use in promoting arts education in your school, district and in your community. Helping others, and especially decision-makers - know of the incredible value of engagement with the arts, the power of the arts to boost innovation and creativity, as well as the social/emotional benefits of involvement in the arts may help. If you have any ideas of specific tools or resources that would be of help to you, please let us know! director@moaae.org
Americans for the Arts (AFTA) has deployed two new 2021 COVID-19 Impact Surveys: one is for organizations, and the other is for artists — both continue to gather financial and employment impact data about the challenges facing the arts sector in relief/recovery efforts and returning to in-person activities. The findings will provide insight to support the field in prioritizing initiatives and communicating the most critical issues to funders and decision makers affecting communities at the local, state, and federal level.
