January 2024
Happy New Year! Hope you are well-rested and anticipating a prosperous and productive 2024!
December contained lots of internal infrastructural work for the Alliance, including working with staff to refresh our strategic plan and ensuring all is in place for the remainder of the FY24 fiscal year. We are pleased to announce an expanded role for Dr. Cynthia Williams Phelps who will become Director of Professional Learning for the Alliance, beginning in January. Other highlights include the announcement of the incoming leader for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Commissioner of Education, appointed by Missouri's State Board of Education. Dr. Senator Karla Eslinger will take the helm on June 1, 2024 after the close of the legislative session.
MAAE's Signature Advocacy Events are approaching and we'd love you to be involved! Fine Arts Education Day - Wednesday, April 3, 2024 - is our annual advocacy day in Jefferson City where we fill the rotunda, grounds and Governor's Garden with a celebration of arts education in Missouri. Live and virtual (video) performances are shared, and student work in the arts are on display. We need you to make this day a reality each year. Apply to have your students featured in-person or virtually by submitting videos. We love to receive your student showcase videos, performances, and also videos which focus on the arts learning process. Many people also meet with their legislators while in the state capitol, so bring your students to our SHOW-ME Arts Summit, a student advocacy training seminar which precedes Fine Arts Education Day on Tuesday evening, April 2, 2024. Virtual training options are also possible. Register early and save! Help with transportation costs may be possible through a bus grant from Missouri State Parks. Plan to participate!

Tap to see guidelines and to nominate
Deadline for nominations January 31, 2024
Nominating supporters and advocates for the arts to be honored at our state capital each year has lasting impact on our communities. MAAE believes that nominating change-makers matters for the following reasons:
Recognition: An award can give advocates visibility and recognition for their contributions to the arts education field, as well as their dedication to promoting creative expression and cultural awareness.
Encouragement: Recognition by colleagues and the community can provide advocates with positive reinforcement for their work, which can encourage them to continue pushing for quality arts education programs.
Inspiration: Honoring advocates with an award can inspire others to get involved in arts education advocacy and take action in their own communities.
Networking: An award ceremony can be an excellent opportunity for advocates to meet and connect with other like-minded individuals, which could lead to collaborations and partnerships in the future.
Please honor those change-makers in your life today!

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

When you are in the middle of grading, lesson planning, rehearsing or just trying to make time for your family, arts advocacy sometimes seems like a distant idea. However, those of us at Missouri Citizens for the Arts (MCA) have your back. Over the past couple of years, tremendous strides have been made in advocating for the Arts (and especially Arts Education) in Missouri.
Thanks to key legislators who worked with MCA, the Missouri Fine Arts Academy will be available in June of 2024 as a free summer institute for talented arts students around the state. Please take advantage of this opportunity and identify students who could benefit from not only the accelerated and intensive learning, but, perhaps more importantly the caring and supportive atmosphere that reinforces the value of their participation in the arts. For application information please go to https://www.missouristate.edu/MFAA/apply.htm
The Missouri Arts Council was granted one of the largest increases in funding in its almost 60 year history. MCA worked to convince the Missouri General Assembly to appropriate over $10 million for Fiscal Year 2024. That puts Missouri in the top 10 of state support for their Arts agency.
Those increases provide even more opportunities for students and teachers. Examples include—
Big Yellow School Bus Grants that support field trips to performing and visual arts event for students
Touring Express Grants which support guest artists who visit schools and work with students on a variety of arts-related activities
Arts Education Program Grants which support Arts organization education programs
So, how can you be a part of the continuing advocacy yourselves? We have a number of ideas, some of which require very little extra effort on the part of teachers.
Take part in Advocacy Week, February 5-9, 2024. This week long event includes advocacy training sessions as well as the actual visit to the Capitol in Jefferson City to speak directly to our legislators. Involve your students by convincing parents and administrators of the civics education value of visiting the capitol while taking part in issues advocacy. https://mo4arts.org/arts-advocacy-week
Invite legislators to attend art shows, concerts, plays and other arts activities you sponsor when they are back home ‘in-district.’
Everything you do should be advocacy! Every performance, event or contact with parents or the public needs to contain an advocacy component. Add reasons why the arts matter in play programs, power-point slides and talks that you give in the community. Engage the students and give them talking points they can use at home and in the community as well.
Thanks so much for all you do for the children of Missouri. We hope to see you at Arts Advocacy events and activities throughout the year.

Do you identify as a school arts leader?
If yes! You are invited!
In Person & Zoom | January 24 | Free
This one-hour workshop is offered In cooperation with the St. Louis-based Fine Arts Collaborative Educators, Megan Meier and Jeff Lackey, along with DESE's Arts Education Director, Dr. Kendra Franks we invite you to help identify those interested in professional learning who have taken on an arts ed leadership role, or aspire to do so.
To help us learn more about Missouri's current and aspiring school arts ed leaders, we've created a survey to help us learn more about their professional learning needs. Even if you cannot attend the event, if you view yourself as a school arts leader, department chair, or arts discipline coordinator, we'd love to hear from you!
Artists and arts educators have worked and practiced to honed their skills. Teachers have studied pedagogy, and the most effective means of engaging students in arts learning; helping them reach their potential. However, when a teacher makes a transition towards administration, and begins navigating challenges associated with leading teams of teacher colleagues, budgets and resources, there are few opportunities to learn how to become for effective leaders in their arts administrative practice.
Once we know who is a part of this group and what their needs might be, we plan to do what we can to provide school arts leader support through resources, networking and convening.
