MAAE News Updates

April 2023

Welcome Spring!

What a whirlwind was the month of March! Read on for reports about the success of our signature arts advocacy events: Fine Arts Education Day, Show-Me Arts Advocacy Summit, and Senate Student Arts Exhibit. I also attended conferences for Missouri's Elementary and Secondary School Principals (MAESP and MoASSP). A highlight was the annual spring conference for the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) where I was honored to receive the "Heart for Art Award." Sixty-six presentations, four keynote speakers, and nearly 300 art educators from across the state gathered to learn and improve their instructional practice.

April promises to be busy with the Missouri Association of School Librarian Conference, and interviews for our FY24 positions of Communications Director, Fine Arts Education Day Coordinator, Show-Me Arts Coordinator, and Make Music Day-St. Louis Coordinator. We have extended the deadline and will still accept resumes and notes of interest until April 10, 2023.

We are thrilled to announce our first "Arts Centered Education" (ACE) School - A.D. Stowell Elementary in Hannibal, Missouri, which welcomed St. Louis-based theatre teaching artist Ed Reggi to work with teams of teachers in art, music, and primary teachers in grades K, 1, and 2. Additional sessions are planned for April. We are pursuing funds for the 23-24 school year, and we even have some remaining funds available for arts integration PD for the current year. Reach out ASAP if you would like to plan an arts integration PD event for this year or if you would like to begin planning to become an ACE school for next year. Arts integration is a powerful tool for student learning, and we would love for more teachers to know about it!

Happy April to all, and best wishes!

Fine Arts Education Day

Highlighting and Celebrating Arts Education at the Missouri State Capitol

March 22, 2023

Fine Arts Education Day was a resounding success! MAAE delights in showcasing arts education in Missouri. The day began with a recognition of the selected students from the Senate Student Arts Exhibit, the MAAE 2023 awards ceremony, and was rounded out with concert performances resounding, reverberating, and resonating throughout the capitol building. Performances featured students from

Theatre was represented with performances from

We also enjoyed virtual performances from

The rotunda concert ended with a finale which featured the entire group singing "America the Beautiful" directed by Fine Arts Education Day Coordinator Jeff Sandquist. The performance was accompanied by Jazz Pianist William Owen.

We are grateful to our allies in the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) and their president Kim Powell for the Youth Art Month displays of student work which helped round out the event so wonderfully.

Performers, sponsors, and audience members were invited to a pizza lunch served on the South Lawn of the Capitol Building. This celebration of arts education in Missouri is not only a lot of fun, it is a tremendous learning opportunity about art, architecture, history, civics, and state government. This annual event also allows for arts education to be the focal point for discussions with Missouri lawmakers.

Thanks to everyone who helped this day be so successful! It is through the hard work of many volunteers, school leaders, chaperones, performers, and members of the community which brings this celebration of arts education to fruition each year. Special thanks for the donation of bottled water for performers and the pizza lunch to Michael Calkins and the Sonic Restaurant in Rolla, MO. Very special thanks to the Francis Family Foundation for their long-standing financial support for this event.

Success at the SHOW-ME Student Arts Advocacy Training Summit

The room was filled with excitement as students from across the state gathered on March 21, 2023 at the Doubletree Hotel in Jefferson City, MO, to learn more about how to be an advocate for the arts and arts education. With guidance from several adult volunteers, students crafted their "elevator pitch", asking for continued funding support for the arts. In addition to this refinement and rehearsal process, students created works of art to be presented as gifts to two of our elected officials: Representative Brenda Shields, who was named MAAE's 2023 Government Arts Advocate Champion, and Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe, who was a keynote speaker at the Senate Student Arts Exhibit Recognition Ceremony at 9:00am on Fine Arts Education Day. After a delicious meal, their training session and a restful night's sleep, students visited with their legislators at the Capitol on Fine Arts Education Day. The students' efforts appear to have been effective and we have high hopes for continued full-funding for the Missouri Fine Arts Academy, and for an increase in the budget appropriation for the Missouri Arts Council. Special thanks to Andrea Branstetter for her outstanding leadership in coordinating this event.

Arts Advocacy

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts

MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

Legislative Update

MAAE's Legislative Liaison, Kyna Iman, has been very busy trying to help MAAE's Legislative Watch Team monitor a host of legislation this season. We are grateful for her help! Kyna's reports are sent to the team weekly, compiled into a single document, arranged in reverse chronological order, and may be accessed at any time.

At this writing we are pleased to report that the efforts of all who participated in Fine Arts Education Day may have helped members of the House approve full funding for the Missouri Fine Arts Academy, allowing any student - regardless of means - to participate. We are encouraged by a proposed increase to the Missouri Arts Council budget as well.

There are bills being considered which we are monitoring closely which may directly affect arts education. If a call to action is needed, we will reach out to you with specific requests to contact your own legislator. Note - these calls are usually time-sensitive, as we work to inform decision-makers of the impact of a decision they are about to make. SIGN UP to receive Legislative Updates and Calls to action.

If you would like to receive more frequent updates, or have specific concerns surrounding a given issue, please let us know and we will do our best to keep you informed.
