We look forward to celebrations throughout March honoring Youth Art Month, Theatre in Our Schools Month, Music in Our Schools Month and Dance in Our Schools Month. We've worked with our allies to celebrate with proclamations from the Governor, art displays and more. This also helps us gear for our upcoming advocacy day - April 3, 2024 - and other Fine Arts Education Day festivities which include our MAAE Awards Ceremony, recognition of student artists selected to exhibit their work as part of the Senate Student Fine Arts Exhibit. This will be preceded by our Show-Me Arts Summit providing advocacy training for Missouri students.

In February the Alliance continued its monthly professional learning offerings and joined our colleagues at the Missouri Citizens for the Arts during their Advocacy Week on February 5-9, with planned visits to the Missouri capitol on February 7. We also join our colleagues at the Missouri Arts Council in recognizing the 2024 Missouri Art Award recipients.

Plan to join us the rotunda with videos, student displays and live performances during our Fine Arts Education Day -(FAEDWednesday, April 3, 2024 - in Jefferson City. Our SHOW-ME Arts Summit (SMArts), April 2, 2024 provides advocacy training for students who meet with their legislators while in the state capitol. Virtual training options are also possible. Attendees will have a chance to receive a free membership in MOAJE for the coming year.

The Power of Dance workshop has been postponed! Watch for a new date for this active workshop that promises to leave participants with knowledge and skills about dance they can immediately use with their students.

It is easy to join the Alliance - Complete this form and join our list of allies for free! Please also invite any of your friends, family, colleagues, students and their parents to join the Alliance. We are stronger together.

We have a new partnership with Give Freely. What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?

We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts
Tap to learn more

MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

Americans for the Arts has created a new resource hub on their website to support Threats to Artistic Freedom. Find updates on activity across the United  States related to advocacy in this area.

With the help of her 'Feathered Godmothers' she discovers the power of music to let those feelings out. The Power of the Blues! Using the music and video of the true Queens of the Blues like Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton, Aretha Franklin and more, Kira learns to share her feelings in a positive way through creating her own Blues song that brings her family closer.

Des Lee Collaborative Fine Arts Festival
Nearly 1,000 choir, orchestra, band, and visual art students came together to make art, make music, and make friends.
Report by Margart Peeno

Nearly 1,000 high school and middle school students from over 30 schools from sixteen school districts gathered at the Blanch M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis for the 21st annual Des Lee Fine Arts Festival. The festival featured young musicians and visual artists who came together to play, learn and create.  This collaboration builds community by leveraging the knowledge and teaching experience of art and music teachers across the metro area.

Michael Smith, the E. Desmond Lee professor of Music Education and Jennifer Fisher, Teaching Professor of Art Education at the University of Missouri, believe that by combining musical and visual art themes this festival provides opportunities for student musicians and artists to have broader experiences in all areas of the fine arts and core curriculum. "It is a powerful opportunity for these musicians and artists to gather with other talented students from other schools" according to Dr. Smith.

Students who have demonstrated exceptional skills in art and music classes are selected to participate in the two-day festival. Musicians are given sheet music for several selections in December to work on their performances with their school music directors. At the festival, the students come together for a rehearsal, led by different practitioners, that culminate in a concert at the end of each day.

Visual Art students studied rhythm, pattern, textures, and colors of the musical selections that were presented by the bands, orchestras , and choirs to showcase their collages and creativity allowing students to work equitably in a collaborative environment that was exhibited in the Touhill Gallery area.

Globally Strong LHS Culture Fair
Report by Elizabeth Barker, Lebanon High School Visual Art Department

Tap to learn more

March 22nd is going to be an amazing day in Jacket Nation as we’ll be hosting the 2024 Globally Strong Culture Fair.  This day is a great opportunity for our students to learn about cultures that we don’t often showcase.  There will be breakout sessions throughout the day throughout the building, an all-school assembly in Boswell Gym, and a fair full of booths in Carr Gym.

The Missouri Arts Council awarded the Lebanon Art Department a nearly $25,000 artist-in-residency grant that is supporting our program. Stop by the Art Department and see two of the four murals in progress by Laughingwell Studio artists Linda Spencer and Roberto Regalado as they work with our students.

This all presents the potential for incredible learning opportunities. Many of these cross-curricular breakout sessions are geared towards students with specialized interests (performing and visual arts, science, sociology, history, world languages).

I look forward to this being an incredible day of learning at LHS. Here is a video produced by Eric Adams promoting the event in 2015. This video is a highlight reel showing the activities from that year. This year's logo was designed by senior Makenna Norris. The fair's theme was chosen by Dr. Richard Todd Payne, who will be performing "Make Them Hear You" from Ragtime the Musical.
