February 2024
Greetings! Hope you are all staying warm, and safe during this winter season!
January recap: Such a busy month!! The annual Missouri Thespian Conference was the largest yet and hosted over 2,700 students, four MainStage shows, five one act performances, hundreds of individual and team events, and awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships in three days of powerful learning experiences. Hats off to the conference organizers for their stellar work! The annual Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) Conference offered a new professional learning format encompassing 65 workshop sessions over five days, in an altered space configuration with facilities changes at Tan-Tar-A resort. All-State Ensemble performances and work with clinicians were a highlight for attendees. Immediately following MMEA was the Powerful Learning Conference sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which featured many Missouri Teachers of the Year finalists as presenters. MAAE always connects with brilliant and enthusiastic educators, and learns more about Missouri's educational landscape to help ensure that the arts may be an integral part of the educational program for Missouri students.

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

Senate Student Fine Arts Exhibit Report
From Vicki Bean Senate Student Fine Arts Exhibit Chair:
Good news! Statewide, there were 140 fine arts teachers who submitted student work for this year's exhibit. This is good, but we still have room for improvement when there are over 2,000 fine arts teachers in the state.
Put your school, your program, and your student artists center stage with decision makers by participating in this exhibit and Youth Art Month.
In February, the 34 senators will choose a work to hang in the senate gallery. The 2024 exhibit will hang at the capitol from April 1, 2024 - March, 2025. The awards ceremony will take place at the capitol on Wednesday, April 3. We will meet with the senators from 8:30 - 8:50 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The submission window for the 2025 exhibit will open in mid-April. For more information, contact Vicki Bean at senate.exhibit@maea.net.
*This awesome advocacy program will stay within the Lieutenant Governor’s office and should be considered as we move into the next election cycle. Your vote counts!

From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.
