IN THIS ISSUE
May! A time of frenzied activity as the school year draws to a close and plans are being made for summer activities and the coming year! Thanks for taking a moment to check in with the work of the Alliance.
You'll likely notice a new look and feel to this publication. MAAE's Communications Director - Rachael Wenzel begins editorial duties this month. We look forward to enjoying the benefits of her skill and expertise.
The month of April featured two conferences, where MAAE was a presenter or exhibitor. The Missouri Arts Education Association Conference recognized student art excellence and teacher exhibition and honored friends of arts education, including a memorial reception for Larry Peeno. Recipient of the 2022 Otto Bean Jr. Award, Senator Barbara Washington, also attended the MAEA conference. The Missouri Association of School LIbrarians Conference began the next day. Read our statement of Artistic Freedom in response to Missouri book challenges and consider endorsing it, either as an individual or on behalf of your organization.
Please help us with our most recent research project. We seek to learn more about current practice in involving the arts in education in Missouri schools. We encourage anyone who incorporates the arts in their teaching practice to respond to this survey. Please pass it on to both arts educators, and classroom teachers or educators in other subject areas. Not only will it help us out, but each survey submitted can enter a drawing to win a $50 gift card.
Looking forward to May when our Advocacy Chair, Andrea Branstetter, 2021 National Student Arts Advocate Levi Baker, and I will be attending our first ever Americans for the Arts Conference in Washington, DC near the end of May. We are looking forward to our visit to Capitol Hill.
Enjoy the rest of your school year!
Phyllis

Planning Underway for MAAE's Signature Advocacy Events 2023
Plan to join us in Jefferson City on March 21-22, 2023 for MAAE's annual events to celebrate the Arts in Missouri. Beginning on Tuesday evening, 3.21.23 with our SHOW-ME Arts (SMarts) Student Advocacy Training Summit held at the Doubletree Hotel in Jefferson City, and led by Coordinator, Andrea Branstetter, students work with coaches to hone their arts advocacy prior to meeting with legislators the next day. Fine Arts Education Day is set for 3.22.23 and is a day filled with much activity and excitement. It begins with the Senate Student Arts Exhibit recognition. Vicki Bean, coordinator is collecting up to 10 samples of student art work beginning on May 1, 2022. Deadline for submissions is Dec. 15, 2022. Missouri's Senators select one piece of art - from any arts discipline - to represent their district which will on display in 2023. Then the student performances and legislative visits begin! The annual MAAE Awards Ceremony is a highlight, and is followed by a series of concerts performed in the Capitol Rotunda. All performers unite for a finale arrangement of "America the Beautiful" conducted by MAAE Chair and Fine Arts Education Day Coordinator, Jeff Sandquist. A pizza lunch for participants will be enjoyed by all, and (weather permitting) outdoor performances will be scheduled in the afternoon. Make plans now to submit an application to perform on 3.22.23 in Jefferson City, MO.
For those who wish to participate, but cannot travel to Jefferson City, we are now accepting your videos. Making a video of your students in performance or engaged in art-making? Send a copy to us. These are valuable advocacy tools in telling the story of arts education in Missouri!

"It was great to hear kids talk about why Missouri is a "cave" state, or the fact that although they lived really close, but that they'd never gone to the Nelson. Hopefully, this project helps us not only see others, but also see ourselves." -Stephanie Hasty, ELA teacher - Lebanon HS
MAAE RIDE - Cross-Cultural Youth Development
Beginning in March of 2022, students from Lebanon High School met with students from North East High School in Kansas City and began a journey exploring DEI and Delicious Dishes. This cross-cultural initiative sponsored by MAAE's RIDE committee unites rural and urban communities, and consists of remote collaborative interactive sessions via Googlemeet and field trip experiences in person. On April 2, 2022 the students from each school enjoyed a field trip experience to visit a mosque in the Kansas City area, and a trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. A field trip is planned for early May to bring NEHS students to Lebanon for the day. The experiences are designed to underscore participant connections to food, culture and identity, and will culminate in the publication of a cookbook featuring participant-selected recipes, annotated with personal stories and visual art.
Want in? Want to know more? We are looking for future participants. Email director@moaae.org.

MAAE has a long-standing interest in the more widespread application of an arts integrated approach to teaching and learning. Our efforts in this area continue to expand, and may soon include MAAE's placement of teaching artists specialists trained in arts integration coaching to provide school site-specific professional development in arts integration. The need for additional help to manage these tasks is a current area of research for MAAE. We welcome feedback and input as our research continues.
Interested in working more deeply with MAAE in the realm of arts integration? Contact director@moaae.org.

The Missouri State Board of Education again observed Missouri Learning Standards in action with the presence of student art work in the hallways of the Jefferson Building and in the meeting room which hosts their monthly meetings. The April 12 meeting featured student artwork on display from Cameron R1 Schools, Kay Leeper, instructor. Music recordings played prior to the meeting (and on breaks) and as part of the livestream viewing experience was from the All-State Jazz Band performance at the 84th Missouri Music Educators Association Annual Conference courtesy of Shhh! Audio Productions, Scott and Danelle Harris, proprietors.
A new feature at the meeting included a segment of education video "good news" which highlighted the Bolivar High School CTE program describing certificate attainment and eligibility for five $1,000 scholarships. This celebration, utilizing the tools of media arts, provides a glimpse into local district programming, and helps share a strong pro-education message.
DESE’s annual recognition of exemplary library programs comes from Senate Bill 743, signed into law by Governor Mike Parson in July 2018. While this annual recognition identifies exemplary programs in Missouri, it also serves to assist school librarians in improving their programs to provide better instruction for students and increased support for teachers. Congratulations!
