MAAE's FREE Professional Learning Networks

Join other educators in conversation and collaboration. All professional learning groups are free and meet regularly. Participation is conducted completely online through email and Zoom. Our programs aim to provide you with learning and growth opportunities that will support your professional journey.

Where in the world is Dr. Phelps?  This year, I have partnered with Executive Director, Phyllis Pasley, to attend state-wide professional conferences, serve as an exhibitor, and present advocacy workshops.  In March, I had the opportunity to connect with Art Educators at the Missouri Art Education Association in Kansas City.  Additionally, I engaged in conversation regarding our numerous Professional Learning opportunities with school administrators at the Missouri Association for Elementary School Principals Association and Missouri Association for Secondary School Principals conferences at Osage Beach. Each of these conferences offered a variety of learning perspectives and opportunities for Missouri Alliance to meet the ongoing needs of professional development and support for arts educators throughout Missouri. In April, I will attend a teaching artist training workshop hosted by the Kansas City Metro Arts Education Network (KCMAAEN), as well as our Show-Me Arts Summit and Fine Arts Education Day in Jefferson City, April. 2-3.

Our Professional Learning Network communities have exciting workshops coming up in April!  Register now for our MAIN workshop  April 29 with Michael Smith from What If Puppets.  You won't want to miss our collaborative IDEA and FAME workshop ALL THAT JAZZ, April 9.  Join Missouri's Jazz Community as we share resources to celebrate this distinctive American music!

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?

We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

MAEA: Youth Art Month

Tap to learn more

Youth Art Month began in 1961 under the direction of the Art and Creative Materials Institute as a way to recognize the importance of Art Education in developing a better quality of life for all people. Art Education supports divergent and critical thinking. It helps develop citizens of a global society and encourages skills like problem solving, creativity, observation and communication.

This year the theme of Youth Art Month is “Dream in Art”. We look to the future with vivid goals, inventive aspirations and painterly practices. Truly, the young people and their teachers embody all that it means to, "Dream in Art". I know that with our combined efforts we will leave the world a more beautiful and creative place.
