IN THIS ISSUE
September, 2022
Hope you have had a relaxing summer and are preparing for the coming year rested and rejuvenated!
In August, the Alliance continued the selection process for new members of the MAAE support team. In addition to the usual business at the start of a new fiscal year, the MAAE Board of Directors met on August 20, and discussed a variety of topics which will be closely monitored throughout the year. These include issues related to teacher retention/recruitment and the challenges which may be associated with recently passed legislation which could restrict the use of certain curricular materials. We also look forward to strengthening our networks and continuing our support for arts education in Missouri.
As you start the new school year, we invite you to become engaged with the work of the alliance,
Become an Ally - as an individual or as an organization who shares our values in support of arts education. There are no dues or fees required to be an ally. Simply complete the form and choose your level of involvement.
Join our FREE professional learning communities - connect with other arts educators across the state with an interest in arts integration, inclusion, diversity and equity work, or addressing other aspects of arts education.
Nominate individuals for the 2023 MAAE's Awards. Recognizing arts educators, administrators, community and governmental champions not only lifts them up and celebrates their contributions, but it also raises visibility for the arts and arts education. Please nominate someone today!
Follow our social media platforms @moartsed. Help stay informed and connected to Missouri's arts education community. When you follow us, or like our posts, it raises the visibility and helps us connect with more allies!
As a service organization, MAAE is always looking for ways to lift up our arts teachers so they can continue to do what they do best: provide Missouri students with a high quality arts education. Remember you can always reach out to the Alliance for access to resources, or other help or support - director@moaae.org.
May your 2022-23 school year be the best yet!

Discussion of Cultural Appropriation in Fine Arts Classrooms
I.D.E.A. network Next session - October 13, 2022 @ 4:30pm
In response to feedback for the need for people to have a safe place for conversations as they address issues connected to racism, inclusion, diversity, and equity, MAAE's RIDE committee began the I.D.E.A. Network - Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in the Arts. The next quarterly meeting of this FREE statewide roundtable discussion group via ZOOM is set for October 13, 2022 @ 4:30pm. Any arts educators interested in exploring work in diversity within their own communities are invited.

MAAE's RIDE Committee is seeking schools from both rural and urban settings who would like to become involved in the DEI and Delicious Dishes program.
The cross-cultural youth development initiative connects students from rural and urban schools, and helps to build relationships, increase empathy and awareness of students’ common and diverse experiences, and gain deeper understanding.
The vehicle for this exploration will include elements of fine arts, literary arts and food, and the culminating project will be the publication of student selected recipes with accompanying stories and images which share the individual’s relationship with that food and its connection to their sense of identity, culture, family, and/or community.
The project includes a blend of in-person and synchronous virtual meetings. Collaborative planning, with a united team of educators working together to build a positive experience for students, with clear and timely communication leads towards a successful and satisfying experience for all involved.
If you are interested in having your students participate in the DEI and Delicious Dishes program, please email director@moaae.org.

MAAE Legislative Update
MSIP 6 will start to report and assess school data beginning this fall, and school districts will be accredited under MSIP 6 beginning in the fall of 2024. MSIP 6 is likely to produce lower APR scores for many schools and districts. The Association is concerned that the new system will be incorrectly perceived as showing a decline in public school outcomes, rather than as just another measurement system.
If you wish to receive updates on legislative issues, please contact advocacy@moaae.org.
MASL will be presenting a session at the annual Missouri School Board Association’s (MSBA) conference in November on the topic of Navigating Book Challenges. We would like to educate and support Boards of Education on the policies and procedures surrounding challenges.
We encourage all teachers and librarians in Missouri to become familiar with the language included in SB 775, available here: https://www.senate.mo.gov/22info/pdf-bill/tat/SB775.pdf SB 775 includes language regarding providing “explicit sexual material” in the school setting. Some materials may be exempt from the bill’s requirements if considered artistic or informational in nature.
October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM)—a collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. NAHM was launched by Americans for the Arts more than 30 years ago as National Arts Week in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities. In 1993, it was reestablished by Americans for the Arts and national arts partners as a month-long celebration, with goals of:
FOCUSING on equitable access to the arts at local, state, and national levels;
ENCOURAGING individuals, organizations, and diverse communities to participate in the arts;
ALLOWING governments and businesses to show their support of the arts; and
RAISING public awareness about the positive impact of the arts and humanities in our communities and lives.
The arts are a national asset and should be available everywhere to everyone—and while a majority of the public believes this based on public opinion polling and other research, it is frequently not their default way of thinking about the arts. National Arts & Humanities Month is an opportunity for everyone to help change public perception and promote the crucial role of the arts and humanities in promoting individual wellbeing, addressing trauma, connecting cultures, highlighting inequities, and making our communities healthier and stronger.
Arts Education for All -in case you missed it
This proposed federal legislation comprised much of the messaging delivered by members of the Missouri Delegation which traveled to Washington D.C. in May, 2022. The Arts Education for All Act (H.R. 5581) was introduced last October in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Reps. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) and Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM), ardent arts and culture champions. This legislation is endorsed by The Missouri Alliance for Arts Education, Grantmakers in the Arts, National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), Americans for the Arts, the Arts Action Fund, and nearly 300 other organizations. If your organization would like to endorse the statement, click here.
