MAAE News Updates

June/July 2023

Happy Summer!

Congratulations on the completion of another school year! We know that being an arts educator comes with distinctive joys and challenges. The month of May brought us another opportunity to continue our efforts to provide support and to express our sincere appreciation for all you do to help your students reach their potential.

We will soon be welcoming new staff to the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education team. We are finalizing the selection process and will introduce our new team members to our community soon. With the support of the MAAE Board of Directors and Executive Committee, we'll be able to improve and expand the support we can provide for arts education within our state.

We are also celebrating the fruits of our successful advocacy efforts in 2022 alongside our partners from Missouri Citizens for the Arts which helped provide full funding support for the 2023 Missouri Fine Arts Academy, which begins in early June of 2023. We also await Governor Parson's signature to finalize the budget approved by the Missouri House and Senate for next year - which currently continues full funding for the academy in 2024. Other advocacy work includes the development of the MAAE 2025 Advocacy Agenda and MAAE's National Student Arts Advocacy Contest Winners from 2022 Peyton Lairmore (Owensville) and 2023 Kylie Brunkhorst (Rolla) will travel to Washington, D.C. in July, 2023 to engage in arts advocacy work at the federal level.

This summer season also brings opportunities for professional learning. We'd like to highlight the TAB-stl Workshop sponsored by MAAE which explores the "Teaching Artistic Behaviors" pedagogy on June 8-9, as well as KS/MO Partnership in Education Summer Symposium for Arts Integration, and the Springfield Regional Arts Council Arts Integration Conference. Professional learning opportunities from the Missouri Bandmasters Association, the Missouri Dance Organization and the Missouri Choral Directors Association are in the final planning stages. Although MAAE's MAIN events and FAME network groups are on hiatus until August, we are thrilled to announce our collaboration with MCDA to bring our I.D.E.A. network to an in-person and virtual audience on July 20. Register and plan to join us as we learn more with the presentation "Voices Lifted - Two Centuries of Black Composers of Opera" featuring the research Diane McCullough. These incredible learning experiences help equip Missouri teachers to meet the needs of their students.

We are excited to welcome new staff to MAAE who will begin training for their new positions which commence on July 1, 2023.

We also offer our sincere thanks to Andrea Branstetter, Rachael Wenzel and Jeff Sandquist as they leave these roles to serve the Alliance in other ways. Finally, as you approach the coming summer, you are encouraged to take some time to engage in some reflection, relaxation, rest and rejuvenation. Take a little time to count the moments of blessing you received this year as you served your students. Also please feel free to share with us ways that the Alliance can provide support to help you be successful.

MAAE Arts Across the Curriculum

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?

We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

MAAE - Looking for new ACE Program School Partners

Promoting teaching strategies which involve the arts in teaching and learning, such as Arts Integration, continues to be priority work for the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education. Funded by a special grant from the Missouri Arts Council, MAAE will implement the Arts Centered Education (ACE) program, with an emphasis on serving Missouri's rural schools.
ACE provides customized, onsite professional learning in arts integration at no cost to the school.

If you think your school may be interested in participating in MAAE's ACE program, please email lauren.hanahan@moaae.org.

Seeking Presenters for MAIN Events

The monthly meetings of the Missouri Arts Integration Network [MAIN events] allow practitioners in arts integration to share a glimpse into their current work or best practice. It is an opportunity to network with others, to listen, learn, and reflect, and increases opportunities for educators to use these skills in their teaching. MAIN events are free to practitioners, and are sponsored by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education.

If you can think of someone who might be a good fit for sharing their practice at one of our MAIN events, please pass their information along to Lauren Hanahan, MAAE's arts across the curriculum program specialist, lauren.hanahan@moaae.org.

Ongoing Efforts For MAAE

Now Accepting Submissions

Deadline - December 31, 2023

We are excited to announce the Senate Arts Exhibition, a showcase of the incredible artistic talents of Missouri youth. This year’s exhibit, like in years past, will feature images of many fine arts disciplines.

As a community, we believe in not only the importance of politics and policy but also in the importance of art and expression. The Senate Arts Exhibit provides an opportunity for our legislators to appreciate and celebrate the creativity within our community.

We invite all Missouri Fine Arts teachers to participate in this event by simply submitting photographs of student work and/or performances for display at the State Capital in Jefferson City. Selected photographs of student artwork/performances will be framed and displayed with the student artist’s name. There is no fee for submission and all submissions are submitted digitally.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to share your art and to connect with your policy makers in a creative and meaningful way. Please contact Vicki Bean at senate.exhibit@maea.net if you have any questions.

Funding sources might include foundations, donations, grants, sponsorships or corporate support. Meetings of the council are held virtually, with plans for a hybrid (virtual and/or in-person) meeting at least once each year. Learn more about the council here. The group is led by council chair Harlan Brownlee.

As you may already know, the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to promote and support high-quality arts education in Missouri schools. Through various initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and partnerships with schools and communities, MAAE has been able to provide countless opportunities for students to learn and excel in the arts.

However, we cannot do this alone. As a non-profit organization, MAAE relies heavily on the support of donors like you to continue its critical work. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a significant difference in enhancing the quality and accessibility of arts education statewide.

I urge you to consider making a donation to MAAE today and help us create a brighter future for our young learners. Thank you in advance for your support and for being an advocate of the arts and education.

We are grateful to those who have made in-kind donations to the Alliance. View the list of in-kind donors here.

Arts Advocacy

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts

MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

MAAE supports funding for the Missouri Fine Arts Academy

MAAE works with legislators to garner support for the funding of the Missouri Fine Arts Academy. As an advocate for arts education, we believe that it is of the utmost importance to provide young people the opportunity to develop their creative and artistic potential. The Missouri Fine Arts Academy does this by providing intensive and rigorous instruction to talented high school students in Missouri.

The Academy is a unique program that has been providing high-quality arts education to students for over 20 years. Students who are accepted into the program have the chance to work with some of the finest artists and educators in the state, and to participate in a range of activities that help them to develop their creative and artistic abilities. The Academy provides training in dance, theater, music, visual arts, and creative writing, and encourages students to explore their passions and interests in these areas.

The Academy has a strong track record of producing talented artists who go on to pursue careers in the arts or use their skills to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The Academy also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among its students, helping them to connect with peers who share their interests and passions.

Given the many benefits that the Missouri Fine Arts Academy provides, MAAE strongly urge you to consider supporting this important program. Please email your representatives to support investing in arts education. This program is not only important for the personal development of our students, but it also has the potential to strengthen our communities by fostering creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Americans for the Arts has created a new resource hub on their website to support Threats to Artistic Freedom. Find updates on activity across the United  States related to advocacy in this area.

You can also endorse MAAE's Artistic Freedom Statement.
