IN THIS ISSUE
December 2022
As we bring the year to a close I'm feeling so grateful to all of our volunteers, donors, sponsors and allies. To all who read our newsletters, emails, messages, social media posts, to those who participate in professional learning and who respond to our calls to action, we thank you. Your ongoing support allows the Alliance to continue to serve the arts education community in Missouri.
After a week spent in Kansas City this November, I think I fell just a bit in love with the city! See Pasley travelogue below for more details. I'm already looking forward to my return there in early January for the Missouri Thespian Conference.
Also in November, MAAE partnered with Missouri Dance Organization (MDO) to sponsor a presentation led by Modern American Dance Company (MADCO) and exhibit booth at the Missouri Society for Health and Physical Education conference at the Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark.
Our professional learning communities are on hiatus through December, but we hope you will join us in January. We have a great line up of professional learning via ZOOM planned. Mark you calendars and plan to join us! Registration links for each of these free professional learning opportunities may be found in articles below.
1/10/23 we welcome April Berry from Kansas City Ballet to our FAME group
1/19/23 we're so excited to meet Maggie Meiners and hear her discussion of her exhibition "Revisiting Rockwell" as part of our IDEA sessions. An optional asynchronous learning component on Norman Rockwell will also be offered. Students are welcome!
1/30/23 see and hear Marilyn Yung, Springfield area ELA teacher as she guides MAIN event participants in "Connecting the Spheres" of art and poetry to enhance the teaching of English Language Arts.
Time shift: Beginning in January, all our professional learning network sessions will begin at 4:30pm (central)
December finds us helping to sponsor the 4th Annual Wellness Conference hosted by MO Association of Secondary School Principals. December is also a time when some turn their attention to end-of-year charitable giving. The Alliance would be pleased to receive a donation from you. As a 501(c)(3), your contributions may be tax-deductible. Any size financial gift is welcome, and helps us continue to serve Missouri's arts educators.
May you and your loved ones enjoy the blessings of this season. The future looks bright!

Pasley Kansas City Travelogue - November 1-6, 2022 - In addition to being an exhibitor and attending the Missouri School Boards Association Conference (in partnership with Missouri Association of School Superintendents) I was able to visit Paseo, North Kansas City, Ruskin high schools, Heritage Middle School and the North Kansas City Early Childhood Center. I also visited Johnson County Cultural Heritage Center, ArtsKC, Kansas City Ballet, the Harmony Project KC, and heard some great jazz performed by executive director of the Comprehensive Arts Institute, Angela Ward. Topped it all off with some great KC Barbecue! Who could ask for more?

SMarts Student Art Advocacy Training Summit
March 21-22, 2023
The SHOW-ME Arts program (SMarts) provides information, training and role-playing activities for students - who then apply those skills by meeting with their legislators.
At the SMarts Summit students will network with other teens in a laid-back, fun atmosphere. Student attendees learn about fine arts issues from legislator trainers and other volunteers, rehearse advocacy pitches and “elevator speech” to present to legislators on Wednesday’s Fine Arts Educators Day.
Over the years students from high schools across the state have met at the annual Summit to learn and practice advocacy skills. Members of Show-Me Arts have taken an active role in working with the Board of the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education in planning advocacy activities. This year we want to involve even more students from schools across the state. More students, speaking in a coordinated effort, means the case for the arts in education is being stated more forcefully than ever.

Senate Hall Art Exhibit showcases fine arts programs in all 34 Senate Districts. This contest also welcomes submissions across ALL arts disciplines. K-12 teachers from any arts discipline take high-quality photos of a work or performance. Images are submitted to us, organized by district and sent to each of our 34 State Senators. They view work from their district and select one image to represent them. The chosen images are printed on 12"x16" paper and displayed in frames throughout the year at the Missouri Capitol to advocate legislator support for the arts.
Both the selected student artist and their teacher are honored at the MAEA Legislative Day and MAAEs Fine Arts Education Day.
Enteries due Dec 31st.

We urge you to write, email (or call) the Secretary of State’s office to help your voice be heard on the below issue before the comment window closes on 12/15/22.
Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts described the proposed rule as a means of blocking public funding for library books and materials that might appeal to the “prurient interests” of minors and requires libraries to adopt age-appropriateness policies. Under the rule, state funding would be denied to any library that does not comply. Read the full text of the Proposed Rule here. Find the text on p.5 in the section entitled: 15 CSR 30-200.015 Library Certification Requirement for the Protection of Minors.
The Missouri Association of School Librarians statement outlines concerns related to usurping local control and diminished capacity to serve communities. The Missouri Library Association, has developed a call-to-action form which shares concerns with wording of the rule, fiscal impact, and provides tools and templates for responses. If using a template, please feel free to edit and modify the language to represent your own views and concerns.
To be considered, all comments about the proposed rule must be received between 11/15/22 - 12/15/22 and must include "15 CSR 30-200.015" in the subject line.
