I'm excited to announce two new members of MAAE team. Stephanie Henry is our new MAAE Awards Coordinator, and Jill Williams is our new MAAE Contest Coordinator. We are pleased to welcome them to a stellar team dedicated to supporting arts ed in Missouri.
I also want to thank all our allies who answered the call to action in response to the proposed state administrative rule sponsored by Missouri's Secretary of State. The KC Star reported that over 10,000 comments were received. This kind of response can affect policies which will help ensure arts education remains strong in Missouri. Thank you! We really appreciate your response.

The Senate Student Arts Exhibit submission deadline has been extended to Jan. 10. Please submit student works of art. All arts disciplines welcome!
Student video and essay contest entries are due Jan. 31, as are nominations for any of the MAAE awards. Please help us recognize excellence in arts education and Missouri arts ed champions. Nominate someone today!
We are collecting videos for virtual participation in Fine Arts Education Day through February 15.
For those participate in person in either the student advocacy training of our Show-Me Arts Summit on March 21 or Fine Arts Education Day on March 22 please submit your application by March 1.

Fine Arts Education Day
March 22, 2023
The Missouri Alliance for Arts Education is seeking both in person performances and video performances. Student performances will be held in the rotunda, and (weather permitting) on the South Steps and in the Governor's Garden between 9am-3pm on March 22, 2023. Interested? There is no fee to participate in the day’s agenda which includes the performances, awards, and visits to legislators’ offices. Students often bring artwork, photographs, playbills, DVDs and CDs to present to their legislators during the visits. Students are also treated to a free lunch of pizza and water in the Governor's Garden. (Pizza reservations needed in advance).

Do you have a student who is passionate about fine arts? Encourage your students to attend the Show-Me Arts (SMarts) Empowering the Student Voice in Advocacy Summit in Jefferson City!
SMarts provides information, training and activities for students - who then apply those skills by meeting with their legislators. Student attendees learn about fine arts issues from legislator trainers and other volunteers, rehearse advocacy pitches and “elevator speech” to present to legislators on Wednesday’s Fine Arts Educators Day.
Overnight hotel accommodations, training and meals for $55 per person.

MAAE's FREE Professional Learning Networks
Join other educators in conversation and collaboration. All professional learning groups are free and meet regularly. Participation is conducted completely online through email and Zoom.

IDEA session in January features visual artist Maggie Meiners and her series "Revisiting Rockwell". MAAE plans to share an asynchronous learning module sharing background information on Norman Rockwell so that participants who attend the live virtual meeting with this contemporary artist can have a frame of reference for viewing her work.

This program will include elements of fine arts, literary arts, and food, and the culminating project will be the publication of student-selected recipes with accompanying stories and images which share the individual’s relationship with that food and its connection to their sense of identity, culture, family, and/or community.

Involvement of the arts in teaching and learning and promoting Arts Integration, as an instructional approach, continues to be priority work of the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education. Funded by a special grant from the Missouri Arts Council, and beginning in 2022-23 school year, MAAE will implement the Arts Centered Education (ACE) program, directed toward promoting an arts integrated approach toward teaching and learning in Missouri's rural schools.

Marilyn Yung will share her experiences of, as Walt Whitman would say, "connecting the spheres" of art and poetry to enhance the teaching of English Language Arts.

Seeking Presenters for MAIN Events
The monthly meetings of the Missouri Arts Integration Network [MAIN events] allow practitioners in arts integration to share a glimpse into their current work or best practice. It is an opportunity to network with others, to listen, learn, reflect, and increase your own ability to use this approach in your teaching. MAIN events are free to practitioners, and are sponsored by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education.
If you can think of someone who might be a good fit for sharing their practice at one of our MAIN events, please pass their info along to Lauren Hanahan, MAAE's arts integration specialist, lauren.hanahan@moaae.org.
Art Integration Data Driven Research Teams Needed
MAAE is seeking arts integration practitioner partner teams in both arts and non-arts subjects in the same school who want to positively impact academic achievement. With customized units or projects to meet your school's distinctive needs, teams will work with an arts integration coach to facilitate their work. Email director@moaae.org for more information.

The Big Yellow School Bus Grant helps schools meet the transportation costs of educational field trips to arts institutions and activities in Missouri that are funded by the Missouri Arts Council. Eligible activities include art museums, festivals, exhibitions, and performances of music, dance, and theater.
Rauschenberg Medical Emergency Grants
This program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 for recent unexpected medical, dental, and mental health emergencies to artists in financial need who are creating in the visual arts, film/video/electronic/digital arts, and choreography. Applications close Jan 13.
Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants
This program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 to professional dancers in need, who have a dire financial emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. Applications close Feb 17.

MAAE's Advisory Council for Financial Sustainability
Meetings are held virtually, with plans for a hybrid (virtual and/or in-person) meeting at least once each year. Learn more about the council here. The first meeting was held on 9/22/22 led by council chair Harlan Brownlee.
Council members attend quarterly meetings to help seek out ways to pursue funding to support MAAE services and programming. The funding sources can come from granting organizations, foundations, donors, sponsors, businesses, or individual contributors. Advisory council members help expand our network of allies working to support arts education in Missouri. They may also choose to assist in the planning or implementation of fund-raising initiatives or giving campaigns to support the Alliance efforts.

Missouri Fine Arts Academy
The Reynolds College of Arts and Letters at Missouri State University is now accepting student applications for the 2023 Missouri Fine Arts Academy set for June 4-17!
Missouri Fine Arts Academy has opened the student application process, as well. If you have 10th and 11th grade students with talents and passions in the following areas, please consider working with them to submit an application:
Visual Arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital art)
Theatre (acting)
Dance (modern, ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop)
Creative Writing (fiction, short story, poetry, playwriting, spoken word)
Music (vocal or instrumental performance, songwriting, composition, electronic music)
The Missouri Fine Arts Academy (MFAA) is a two-week summer residential program for highly motivated student artists in visual arts, theatre, dance, creative writing, and music. The Academy offers an intensive schedule of classes in interdisciplinary and discipline-specific arts, and a wide range of co-curricular activities. MFAA is conducted with the support and cooperation of Missouri State University, and is funded through program fees, grants, endowments, scholarships, and private donations.

U.S. Department of Education Nationwide Call for Student Performing Artists
The Department of Education issued a “call” across the United States and its territories for student performing artists interested in showcasing their talent, virtually or in-person, at internal and external Department-hosted events.
This is an opportunity for student performers to showcase their talent and gain exposure to an appreciative audience invested in education and student success. Valentine's a la Flamenca 2023
This event scheduled for February 11, 2023 at the Sheldon, St. Louis allows for the celebration of both. This St. Louis Flamenco Society's annual event occurs around Valentine's day and is a great way to experience the music, dance and passion of Flamenco.
National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest
The national winner and his/her parents and teacher will be invited to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 40th annual National Missing Children’s Day Ceremony on May 24, 2023. Transportation and lodging will be provided. Here is more info.

Try Chinese ink painting techniques at the Nelson under the instruction of Hong Chun Zhang, one of the artists featured in our current exhibition Found in Translation: Explorations by 8 Contemporary Artists. We will also visit the exhibition with Hong to learn about how she approaches making art, and we will distribute teaching resources connected with the exhibition. The Powerful Learning Conference showcases effective, evidence-based practices that improve learning for every student in every school. The conference will feature three keynote speakers and 65 concurrent sessions. The 2023 Powerful Learning Conference will be held on January 30-31, 2023 at Tan-Tar-A Conference Center in Osage Beach.
The sessions will feature practitioners from across the state including Elizabeth Barker, and Stephanie Hasty who will be sharing arts integrated lessons as part of their "Globally Strong Culture Fair," and "DEI and Delicious Dishes" as well as others who are implementing effective, evidence-based practices, including presentations from Teachers of the Year, Blue Ribbon Schools, and other award winning educators.

The Missouri Arts Council features Missouri Artists on their website each month. Selected artists of all disciplines — four each month from around the state —receive a $300 stipend. Learn more and apply here. Congratulations to all of the December featured artists listed below:
Honorees of the 2023 Missouri Arts Awards
Since 1983, the Missouri Arts Council and the State of Missouri have been honoring our state’s arts heroes – the people who make the arts happen. Our annual Missouri Arts Awards celebrate people, organizations, and communities that have made profound and lasting contributions to the cultural and artistic climate of the state. Including the 2022 honorees, the awards have acclaimed 242 people, organizations, and communities throughout the state. Honorees are selected by an independent panel in six categories: Arts Education, Arts Organization, Creative Community, Individual Artist, Leadership in the Arts, and Philanthropy.
The 2023 honorees will be recognized in a ceremony at the Missouri State Capitol on Wednesday, February 8, 2023.
The Missouri History Museum is looking for an education and community engagement coordinator.
Community Enrichment Strings Instructor needed. The teacher does not need to be certified. It may be a good fit for a college student looking for some educational experience.

The Missouri Alliance for arts education encourages participation in statewide arts organizations. Educational professionals are encouraged to join these organizations. Participation in such organizations will strengthen advocacy efforts for fine arts education and ensure that students throughout the state have access to quality forms of expression.
