Although we missed the chance to gather, virtual participation allowed more than 3500 arts students to be represented. Make Music Day - MONDAY June 21, 2021
Originating in France (1982) as the Fête de la Musique, MAKE MUSIC DAY is a free music festival is now held on June 21 in more than 800 cities in 120 countries around the world. Some cities have begun the tradition of sponsoring a parallel event on December 21. Learn more at the Make Music Day U.S. heqdquarters site.

KC MMD seeks a MUSIC LEADERS and participants for the WINDOW SERENADE
KC Summer Camp Music-Making Explo - KC Parks and Rec sponsors a variety of camps at six locations, Hillcrest, Kansas City North, Southeast, Tony Aguirre, Westport Roanoke and St. Patrick’s School. They are seeking a music leader to drop in to each location for a session (45 min.-1hr) of music-making on 6/21 between the hours of 7:30am - 5pm. Having fun making music is the idea, using sticks and bucket drums, kazoos, singing or body percussion. These music-making explo sessions could be led by one ambitious traveling music leader or several who might share leadership. Questions? email director@moaae.org.
KC Kazoo Band Parade Leader - 11 – 12 noon Mill Creek Park + They are looking for a leader will work with up to 100 kazoo players in a parade around the Country Club Plaza. Free kazoos will be available to the first 100 players.
Window Serenades - 11 am- 4:30 pm Carnegie Village Rehabilitation + Solo musicians or local choirs serenade residents at a nursing home, or another housing facility for vulnerable populations who are especially unable to leave their homes, from outside windows. CONSIDER small ensembles, solos, duets and larger groups from your schoolto be a part of the Window Serenades. 2021 Teacher of the Year Asks Students to Consider Being a Teacher
Teachers impact students’ lives in tremendous ways. They truly change lives. But Missouri is facing serious staffing shortages in the teaching profession. There is every reason to believe that COVID-19 may only exacerbate the issue which has existed for some time. To help address this issue, DESE has embarked on a campaign to encourage Missouri students to consider pursuing a career in education. We’re thrilled to share this brief 90 second video as part of this campaign, featuring Darrion Cockrell, a.k.a. Mr. DC, Missouri’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. Mr. DC talks directly to students about the incredible opportunities available to those in the teaching profession. Please share with anyone who may consider joining the profession.

Kansas City Art Institute is searching for a new president - effective June, 2022. For several years, they’ve enjoyed the leadership of Tony Jones, the former Chancellor of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. KCAI is a small, independent undergraduate-focused college (700-800 students), focused on art making, with distinctive programs in illustration, animation, and graphic and product design, among others.
According to the firm assisting with the candidate search, the person they seek could be:
"someone who is already in higher education, or it could be someone coming from the museum world or another arts nonprofit, or a corporate leader with background/interest in the arts. The ability to lead strategic vision work and to build new programs is essential, as is someone who can work effectively with the board and donors.

NOW HIRING - Arts Integration Specialist
Mesner Puppet Theatre is seeking a full-time staff arts integration specialist. This salaried, one year position includes the potential for an extension based on performance and continued funding. The start date is between July 1, 2021 - August 1, 2021. The goal is to empower educators to incorporate arts integration strategies into their classroom through modeling lessons with students, collaborating with educators on developing their own arts integrated lessons, and providing professional development workshops on theory, technique and strategies. Missouri's Bicentennial
200 years of Statehood 1821-2021
Mark your calendars for Missouri Bicentennial Statehood Day Events
The Missouri Bicentennial Commission is sponsoring a series of events this summer to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Missouri Statehood. On Aug. 10, Missouri will reach 200 years since it became the 24th state to enter the union. As the state’s bicentennial rapidly approaches, many Missourians are gearing up to celebrate.
Together for ’21 Fest will be held Aug. 6-8 on the University of Missouri campus and Center for Missouri Studies in Columbia. The free, three-day festival will include music, folk arts demonstrations, talks, film screenings, exhibitions and a virtual reality gallery tour of a collection of 98 works of art from the mid-1940s titled Missouri Heart of the Nation. Join this three-day festival at Center for Missouri Studies and the MU campus. >learn more
First Missouri State Capitol in St. Charles will be commemorating the bicentennial on Aug. 7. Visitors can tour the historic rooms where statehood began, attend lectures, and walk the stationary parade route and more. The event is being organized by Missouri State Parks.
Missourians are invited to Jefferson City for Statehood Day on Aug. 10. The day begins at the State Capitol with the formal recognition of the Missouri Bicentennial; reveal of the Missouri Bicentennial stamp; bicentennial-themed exhibits in the Capitol, including the Bicentennial Quilt and the My Missouri 2021 photograph display. In addition, there will be U.S. Naturalization Ceremony in the morning and a statewide ice cream social is planned in the afternoon at the Capitol and in communities across the state.
Our Missouri Celebration is the theme for this year’s Missouri State Fair. Special exhibits to commemorate statehood, along with livestock shows, concerts, motorsport events, and more are being offered to visitors who attend the fair. In addition to these major events, many community celebrations are being planned for the bicentennial. Learn more at missouri2021.org.

Check out the class of long-time MAAE board member, Dr. Alice Bloch's MOVE FOR YOUR HEALTH, DANCE FOR YOUR SPIRIT - Core Strength and Flexibility for Seniors - a class which offers fun guided movement experiences that let participants experience the benefits and enhanced well-being of increased core strength and flexibility, mental agility and a sense of empowerment as they move fully, safely, and with enjoyment. . Dr. Bloch demonstrates and explains all exercises, providing guidance and personalized feedback. Thursdays, 10-11 AM. Kansas City Union Station officials recently announced unprecedented donor support to send area students (age 12 and older) to the international tour of Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away., created by Musealia and Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, opening June 14 at Union Station.
The exhibit is on an international tour, bringing together 700 original objects and 400 photographs from over 20 institutions and museums from around the world, 75 years after the liberation of Auschwitz. "A very generous community of donors have made school groups from Missouri and Kansas eligible for free admission,” George Guastello, Union Station president and CEO, said. “Public, private, parochial and home schools are eligible." Reservations are open for dates July 2020 through January 2022. For groups of 10 or more, a rate of $15* per ticket. All admissions include individual audio guides for added content and convenience (in English and Spanish). Field trip scholarships will be considered and awarded on a first come/first served basis. B. Dyas. This Jazz Informance was hosted by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. The event focused not only on what jazz is and why it is so important to America but also on the American values that jazz represents: teamwork, unity with ethnic diversity, the correlation of hard work and goal accomplishment, perseverance, democracy, and listening to one another. >more info

James McKay, Jr. - A & E - Arts Educator of the Year
The Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis honors individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the St. Louis region’s arts community and has announced James McKay, Jr. a strings teacher and Director of Orchestras for Jennings School District, as their 2021 Arts Educator of the Year. This prestigious honor will be celebrated on May 24, at The Big Top event venue in the Grand Center Arts District. James McKay's work with James McKay was Jennings School District's 2017 Teacher of the Year and has dedicated his life to creating doors of opportunities for youth through his work as a certified K-12 Instrumental Music Educator, and through the founding of Gateway Music Outreach providing budding young musicians in underserved communities with access to affordable quality music instruction and opportunities to attend performances and receive master classes with prominent artists. He is a member of the American String Teachers Association and the Missouri Music Educators Association. Congratulations, James!

Gateway Music Outreach - Virtual Opera Camp 7/5-7/9/21
Join Gateway Music Outreach for a virtual week-long adventure on the high seas experiencing Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance! Campers will explore composing music, acting, performing sea shanties, lighting, and set design — all the things that go into making an incredible opera production. Our educators will direct campers on their Zoom journey, which will conclude with a debut of the campers' personalized video of a unique scene inspired by the comic opera "The Pirates of Penzance."

Campers will learn about singing, acting, writing, composing, music, making instruments, and designing costumes, lighting, and sets — all the things that go into Opera Theatre’s show-stopping productions. The week culminates with a premiere of the campers’ own at-home video of an original scene inspired by The Pirates of Penzance.

Heroes Among Us Awards from MSBA
Do you know someone in your schools or community who has gone above and beyond to ensure your schools are safe or intervened in a situation and saved lives? Is there a program that is having a dynamic impact on the climate and culture of your schools or has done something that has had a positive impact in making their school safe? If so, please take this opportunity to nominate this student, parent, staff member or part of your community. Nominations for the Heroes Among Us Award will be accepted until September 1.
One adult and one K-12 student finalist will be selected. Submitter will be contacted prior to the conference in order to obtain additional information and a photo of the nominee selected as a finalist. Both finalists will be identified by September 15 and will be invited to the award presentation at the 2021 Safe Schools and Colleges Forum held in Kansas City on November 4.

Results of MAAE Pandemic Impact on Arts Education Survey
In December 2020-January 2021, MAAE conducted a survey of arts educators measuring the impact of the pandemic on teaching and learning in their school. The results have compiled and a one-page summary report and full detailed report are now available for review. 100 respondents from across the state shared their views and insight.
MAAE recognizes the extraordinary efforts made by all educators, and arts educators in particular. With uncertainty about the allocation of local resources - specifically time and funding - on the horizon, MAAE is making plans to provide local advocacy resource materials for you to use in promoting arts education in your school, district and in your community. Helping others, and especially decision-makers - know of the incredible value of engagement with the arts, the power of the arts to boost innovation and creativity, as well as the social/emotional benefits of involvement in the arts may help. If you have any ideas of specific tools or resources that would be of help to you, please let us know! director@moaae.org
COVID IMPACT SURVEYS for ORGANIZATIONS AND ARTISTS
The arts and entertainment sectors of our economy have been especially impacted by the pandemic and subsequent venue closures and reopening guidelines with limited capacity for health and safety reasons. Collecting data helps inform policy makers.
To help gather that data, Americans for the Arts has deployed two new 2021 COVID-19 Impact Surveys: one is for organizations, and the other is for artists — both continue to gather financial and employment impact data about the challenges facing the arts sector in relief/recovery efforts and returning to in-person activities. The findings will provide insight to support the field in prioritizing initiatives and communicating the most critical issues to funders and decision makers affecting communities at the local, state, and federal level. Lee's Summit School Board Resolution - Success!
As previously reported, the Lee’s Summit Board of Education unanimously adopted the Arts Are Education resolution on 2/25/21 at their meeting. Former MAAE Executive Director Ben Martin shared the presentation begins around 11:10.) We've also learned that Wentzville Schools also recently passed this resolution. If your board also adopts the resolution - let us know using this online form. NEED HELP designing your local campaign to have your local school board adopt the resolution? Adopt a Legislator - MAAE & Missouri Citizens for the Arts
MAAE is working with partners from arts education organizations to build a statewide coalition of arts advocates we call "Arts Champions." Our partners in Missouri Citizens for the Arts have created an Adopt-a-Legislator program. The goal is to partner 34 MO Senators and 163 MO Representatives with an arts advocate in their district, to build relationships and help increase understanding about the impact of pending legislation on the arts and arts ed. Missouri Citizens for the Arts is a non-partisan, state-wide, grass roots organization that advocates to secure stable financial support for the arts to benefit Missouri and its citizens. MAAE Legislative Advocacy Work
Special thanks to the MAAE Legislative Watch team for their conscientious attention investigating the potential impact on arts education of pending legislation. With a close of the 2021 legislative session, the team wishes to thank all those who answered the call to action. We count as success the inclusion of a $500K line item in the state budget to help fund the Missouri Fine Arts and Scholars academies, helping to make these powerful learning experiences available to students of all financial means. Data Driven Design
MAAE is still looking to add arts integration practitioner partner teams in both arts and non-arts subjects in the same school who want to team up to use an arts integration approach to positively impact academic achievement. With customized units or projects to meet your school's distinctive needs, teams will work with an arts integration coach to facilitate their work. 2021 Life Changer Capstone Award Nominations Open
The National Life Group Foundation is calling for nominations for the Capstone Award. This award is for any school district employee who is retiring at the end of the 2020-21 school year.

NATIONAL STUDENT ARTS ADVOCATE ESSAY CONTEST MAAE is seeking one exemplary student applicant to become a part of the Missouri delegation to Washington D.C. With virtual attendance in 2021 and a trip to our nation's capitol planned for 2022 the winning students will receive paid registration and air travel/hotel expenses to attend the National Arts Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC in 2022. Candidates will also participate in MAAE statewide arts advocacy initiatives of Show-Me Arts and Fine Arts Education Day. Some people say the arts aren't essential. Some people say they aren't important. You -- sharing your stories about how your life is better - because of arts ed - is one of the most effective forms of advocacy. Open to adults and students, let your video tell your story of the positive impact of the arts. Fine Arts Education Day Essay Contest - Students in Grades 3-12 - deadline 1/31/22
Students in grades 3-12 are invited to participate in the MAAE Fine Arts Education Day Essay Contest. In 500 words or less, please ask your student to construct a typed, double-spaced entry (12-point font) in response to one of these prompts:
- How has music, visual art, dance or drama (theatre) influenced you or your life as a student?
- Why is it important for every school to provide instruction in the arts to every child every day?
In the upper left corner, list the student name, grade level, name of fine arts teacher who submitted the entry, arts subject the teacher teaches, school name (district and building), school address and school telephone number. Each essay can be uploaded into this googleform. Questions or concerns, contact director@moaae.org.
A $50 prize will be awarded to one winning essay by students in each category grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 and $50 will also be awarded to their sponsoring fine arts teacher. The awards will be presented at the MAAE Fine Arts Education Day at the State Capitol in March. >more info

MAY /June Spotlight - MAAE Board - Stephen Rew
Due to a clerical error, the spotlight link was inaccurate for May. To help correct that error, we reprise our spotlight of Stephen Rew.
Stephen Rew holds his Bachelors and Masters of Music Education from the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. In over a decade as a public educator he has received his district’s Teacher of the Year Award two times and is a sought after clinician and motivational speaker with “Fired Up” Presentations. Currently, he is the President for the Missouri Choral Directors Association. Rew is a Vocal Music Teacher at Raymore-Peculiar High School and is also entering his 21st year as a professional church musician serving as the music director at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church nearby the location where he and his wife, Cindy and their children Mason (age 14) and Chloe (age11) live in their dream home. www.stephenrew.com
