2020 Virtual Show-Me Arts (SMarts) Student Advocacy Training

Training for the next generation of arts advocates, this initiative provides information, training and role-playing activities for students - who then apply those skills by meeting with their legislators or other elected officials. It sharpens communication skills and amplifies student voices in support of arts and arts education.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are seeking teachers and adult sponsors who may wish to involve students in this important work. Our initial orientation meeting for potential adult sponsors and teachers will be December 10, 2020 from 7-8pm. REGISTER for this session here.

Behind the Scenes - Special Workshop 12/10

In a collaborative venture, MAAE has joined the Missouri Arts Council and Roger Kelley, Fine Arts Curriculum Director for Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary education to reach out to Missouri's non-profit arts organizations and teaching artists. Typically the sessions are just one hour in length and feature updates and presentations designed for this audience. This special session set for 12/10/20 from 10:30am-noon (central time) is planned to help non-profit arts agencies learn more about how Missouri Learning Standards in fine arts can improve their outreach to PreK-12 schools. Early Learning Task Force

MAAE is seeking arts educators, early childhood educators, parents, early childhood arts specialists, teaching artists and anyone interested in exploring current issues in providing high quality arts education experiences for Missouri's youngest learners. Want to be a part of the conversation? Email director@moaae.org.

MAAE will host both daytime and evening sessions monthly, between November 2020 and February 2021. Additional meeting dates in March and April 2021 have been set and will be used if needed.

COUNTY LEVEL CARES Act funding!

MAAE partners with Missouri Citizens for the Arts which continues to fight for more State CARES Act funding for the Arts Industry. We urge you to spread the word that county-level funds may be available in your region. Reach out to your local County elected officials to request County CARES Act funding. National Endowment for the Arts Grants - up to 20K for - "Big Read"

Arts Midwest is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Program, a community engagement opportunity with grants of up $20,000 for community-wide reading programs (virtual and/or in-person). Organizations can choose one of six available books. They can also tie in thematically-related books of their choice to expand the program's potential and reach a wider audience.

When? The deadline to apply is January 27, 2021.

MAAE- MAIN EVENT

Plan to join our next monthly MAAE - MAIN EVENT - December 7 at 4pm when we welcome - Amanda Martin-Hamon, Associate Director of K-12 Education and Molly Nevius Learning Communities Coordinator-both at the Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas will showcase their newest statewide arts integration outreach initiative PEAK (Partners Engaging Arts across Kansas). This exciting initiative is focusing on SEL and character development (SECD). They also plan to display some of the educational resources available at the Spencer tied with their upcoming exhibition Healing, Knowing, Seeing the Body including their lesson plan bank and collection cards. register here

Speech and Theatre of Missouri had such a warm response to their virtual conference that their members wanted more! MAAE is pleased to participate in their virtual offerings with an 11:35 minute webinar "THE MO YOU KNOW" discussing the how theatre fine arts teachers might consider exploring the Missouri Legacies Project to help meet curricular objectives and celebrate Missouri's bicentennial at the same time! This session unpacks the definition of art integration and uncovers the characteristics of quality integration that align with best practice in education. MAAE Arts Integration HELP WANTED!

SEEKING EDUCATION PARTNERS! MAAE has developed a tool which may be of use to arts integration practitioners as they collaborate with others in designing lessons and units of instruction. We are looking for some teachers in both arts and non-arts subjects in the same school who might want to team up and try out some new ideas. We have plans to partner you with an arts integration coach to help facilitate your work. Interested? email director@moaae.org for more information.

Co-Sponsored by MAEA and MAAE we celebrate excellence in student work exhibited in the hallway outside the Senate chambers. One entry is selected for each Senate district. (37 pieces of art statewide.) Student work is submitted by the teacher, and submitted to each senator for the final selection process. NOT just for visual artists! On Saturday, December 12 from 9:00am–10:00am for this first-ever professional development workshop with SLSO Music Director Stéphane Denève. Stéphane will share his score study process and rehearsal preparation routine as educators follow along with him through the score of Beethoven’s Third Symphony, “Eroica.” Perfect for band, orchestra and choral directors as well as general music educators, this workshop will be held via Zoom and questions for Stéphane are highly encouraged. Spotlight on CAI's "Show and Shed"

Celebrating the 6th Annual “Show and Shed” Instrumental Music Workshop which took place on Saturday, October 24, at The Gem Theater in Kansas City, Missouri. Youth Musicians join professional musicians on the historic stage. Hosted by James and Angela Ward of the Comprehensive Arts Institute with funding support from the Missouri Arts Council. Classic 107.3 Musical Legacies

Musical Ancestries™ is a quarterly program designed to teach school-aged children about their musical and cultural heritage. The November episode - which aired on 11/21/20 held a focus on Jewish Music. New Teacher Mentor Help

MAAE wants Missouri's arts teachers to succeed. We will happily help connect teachers new to the profession with an experienced mentor to help ensure that success. MISSOURI ART NOW

Missouri Art Now is a statewide competition for visual artists who live and work in Missouri. To celebrate Missouri’s bicentennial, several arts organizations have come together to present a traveling exhibit throughout 2021. The exhibition will feature sixty works from artists throughout the State of Missouri, together demonstrating the vibrant visual arts culture in the state. TOURING VENUES: The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau; The State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia; Post Art Library/ Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin; Hannibal Arts Council in Hannibal; and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in Saint Joseph.

MAAE RIDE Committee Retreat Planned

With the completion of its first research project, MAAE's RIDE Committee addressing issues of Racism, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity is making plans for their first retreat . With so many ideas generated from the Listening Sessions report for potential action, there is a need for reflection and the building of consensus in devising the action plans for next steps. Revisions to the report are nearly complete. Reaffirming MAAE's mission to promote high quality arts education for the benefit ALL Missourians, the RIDE committee is working to eliminate elements of systemic racism or bias which are present in our collective work. COCA Autumn Institute Success

COCA affiliated teaching artists and facilitators from across the country brought extraordinary learning experiences on 11/7-8/2020 as learners explored content originally developed for the 'Summer Institute.' The event was open to both arts and non-arts teachers, and MAAE's executive director, Phyllis Pasley was privileged to attend. "Energizing, inspiring, enlightening," said Pasley, "This training is so beneficial for teachers and students alike. I only wish more people had the opportunity to experience what these gifted teaching artists had to share!"

Collaborative Action Campaign

MAAE has joined a united effort utilizing National Association for Music Education's voter voice platform to give our constituents an opportunity to make their voices heard.

This three-part action campaign is addressed to:
  1. encourage Missouri state legislators to support education in future budgets
  2. encourage US Congress to appropriate COVID relief funds in support of education
  3. encourage Missouri's governor to release withheld funds

Fine Arts Education Day "A Bicentennial Celebration!"

Plan to join us for MAAE's Fine Arts Education Day on March 24, 2021 at the Missouri State Capitol to highlight the importance of fine arts education in Missouri schools. In our COVID-19 world, we imagine there will be opportunities for remote visits, or sharing of video recordings to help us make connections between the arts and Missouri's legislators. We also have hopes for live performances if safety guidelines permit. Consider participating and STAY TUNED as our plans develop. We'd love to have you involved.
