#ShowMeSuccess Initiative

Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has been collecting stories of "good news" about what is happening in Missouri Schools. We congratulate the Drama Department of Oakville High School in the Mehlville School District for submitting their story. The context: To host a play safely during the pandemic, the Oakville High School theatre found a creative, socially distant solution and livestreamed all of their performances for the first time ever. Does your school or district have a "good news" success story? Consider sharing that story with DESE and with MAAE at @moartsed. These stories are critical to helping voters and decision-makers value the work of Missouri Educators!

NOTE: DESE is still asking for #ShowMeSuccess Stories in a social media campaign through June, 2021 to share the examples of how public education and dedicated educators have stepped up to continue providing a great education to Missouri students during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, click here.

Power of your Story - maae.educate.today

When gathering in-person was not an option for Fine Arts Education Day in 2021, 63 different schools responded by submitting their videos for our virtual celebration. The powerful presence of Missouri Fine Arts Education could be felt both within the Capitol Rotunda and throughout the building on March 24, 2021. Student voices and student performances which are a testament to the value of arts education become amplified, helping inform legislators and share the narrative that the arts are alive and well in Missouri schools.

You can view the collected videos at https://maae.educate.today/. The videos are searchable by school, district, legislative district, subject, and more. Although we hold out hopes that Fine Arts Education Day 2022 will be in-person, we will be collecting videos to help share your story to add to our collection in the coming year. Be thinking about what videos you may be able to submit to help our efforts to share good news about arts education in your legislative district!

Missouri's Bicentennial 200 years of Statehood 1821-2021

Missouri Bicentennial Statehood Day Events

The Missouri Bicentennial Commission is sponsoring a series of events this summer to commemorate the 200 th anniversary of Missouri Statehood. On Aug. 10, Missouri will reach 200 years since it became the 24th state to enter the union. As the state’s bicentennial rapidly approaches, many Missourians are gearing up to celebrate.

The free, three-day festival will include music, folk arts demonstrations, talks, film screenings, exhibitions and a virtual reality gallery tour of a collection of 98 works of art from the mid-1940s titled Missouri Heart of the Nation. Join this three-day festival at Center for Missouri Studies and the MU campus. >learn more

  • First Missouri State Capitol in St. Charles will be commemorating the bicentennial on Aug. 7. Visitors can tour the historic rooms where statehood began, attend lectures, and walk the stationary parade route and more. The event is being organized by Missouri State Parks.

  • Missourians are invited to Jefferson City for Statehood Day on Aug. 10. The day begins at the State Capitol with the formal recognition of the Missouri Bicentennial; reveal of the Missouri Bicentennial stamp; bicentennial-themed exhibits in the Capitol, including the Bicentennial Quilt and the My Missouri 2021 photograph display. In addition, there will be U.S. Naturalization Ceremony in the morning and a statewide ice cream social is planned in the afternoon at the Capitol and in communities across the state.

  • Our Missouri Celebration is the theme for this year’s Missouri State Fair. Special exhibits to commemorate statehood, along with livestock shows, concerts, motorsport events, and more are being offered to visitors who attend the fair. In addition to these major events, many community celebrations are being planned for the bicentennial. Learn more at missouri2021.org.

Just in time for the Bicentennial

As Missouri prepares for the 200th anniversary of Statehood, MAAE is encouraging lessons across the state celebrating our state, its regions and communities. It is opportune time to investigate the Smithsonian American Art Museum interactive map that lets you search for American artists by state. Selecting Missouri on the map yields some fun rabbit holes to venture down! Amelia Nelson in the Spencer Art Reference Library alerted us to this great resource. Check it out!

How will you celebrate with your students?

August 10, 2021 marks an important milestone in Missouri history. That date marks Missouri's 200 years of statehood! PD WORKSHOPS and SYMPOSIUMS

in case you missed it

Self-Care Workshops - sponsored by NCDPI - April - May

In a year of unimaginable stressors, the need for self-care has never been stronger. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and their partners have prepared a workshop series, shared with us via Missouri's DESE through the network of state directors of arts education. Missouri teachers are welcome to join these NC-based webinars. Consider attending!

We all know that we cannot serve students from an empty cup. Every educator has been repeatedly told to put on their own oxygen mask first but for most, virtual, hybrid, and in-person teaching during the COVID-19 Pandemic has been overwhelmingly stressful. Many adults do not know where or how to begin to address their own SEL needs but are charged with leading these efforts for children. We are here to help! ALL educators are welcome to join in this 8-session series to learn practical techniques to manage stress, rekindle daily joy through the arts, and explore how to apply lessons learned in this series to the classroom through Arts Integrated SEL lessons for students. We look forward to sharing this valuable content with you and know that your students will be better served when you engage in a little SELf Care!

COVID IMPACT SURVEYS for ORGANIZATIONS AND ARTISTS

The arts and entertainment sectors of our economy have been especially impacted by the pandemic and subsequent venue closures and reopening guidelines with limited capacity for health and safety reasons. Collecting data helps inform policy makers.

To help gather that data, Americans for the Arts has deployed two new 2021 COVID-19 Impact Surveys: one is for organizations, and the other is for artists — both continue to gather financial and employment impact data about the challenges facing the arts sector in relief/recovery efforts and returning to in-person activities. The findings will provide insight to support the field in prioritizing initiatives and communicating the most critical issues to funders and decision makers affecting communities at the local, state, and federal level. Check the categories below, and please fill out the survey which may apply to you.

SMarts - SHOW-ME Arts - Advocacy Training Initiative

MAAE has enjoyed the leadership of Teri Turner as our Our SMarts training session coordinator for a number of years. With her guidance, we've been able to successfully navigate both in-person and virtual training sessions. Although Teri plans to retain her position on the MAAE board, she is stepping down from the role of SMarts Coordinator in order to pursue interests in theatre education leadership and advocacy at the national level. We acknowledge and appreciate Teri's service to the organization and to the field of arts education in Missouri.

As we begin work to outline the shape of SMarts training sessions MAAE will be seeking a candidate who is interested in training the next generation of arts advocates. If you are interested in becoming involved in this work, email director@moaae.org.

Thank you Teri Turner for your incredible leadership and dedication to the arts and arts education, to arts advocacy and to students of Missouri!

MAAE Legislative Advocacy Continues

MAAE continues to monitor several bills being considered in Missouri's house and senate which may have an impact on arts programs across the state, and on education in general. The Legislative watch committee meets weekly to assess the current situation and prepare testimony as needed. To learn more about the bills being watched and MAAE's response click here.

There are times when the MAAE Legislative watch team may ask for your help in reaching out to members of the Missouri House or Senate in regard to a specific issue. We know your time is valuable and very limited, so we work to make answering our calls to action as simple and succinct as possible, with opportunities to learn more if desired. For those who answered our previous calls to action we say "thank you!" To learn more, or receive more frequent updates, email director@moaae.org.
