COLLEGE PUBLIC SPEAKING 101 - 01460 - 1/2 CREDIT (SEM)

Prerequisite: Open to students in grades 11-12.  

Credit: Elective

Description:  SPE 101 is devoted to the study of oral communication as it relates to the speaker, their purpose, subject, outline, presentational aids, delivery and audience. The first part of the course emphasizes the theory of public speaking, while the latter part is concerned with the analysis, preparation and performance in the areas of informative, demonstrative, persuasive and occasional speaking. Students who successfully complete this course can obtain as many as 3 credits from Dutchess Community College at a reduced tuition. 

SAT PREP FALL - 01540 - 1/2 CREDIT (SEM)

- Seniors and Juniors (not taking AP/ College English or Pre Calc - Calc).  Must take the SAT in December (minimally).

SAT PREP SPRING - 01545 - 1/2 CREDIT (SEM)

- Advanced Juniors (taking College or AP English and Pre Calc or Calc and the start of the Junior Year) and any Senior.  Must take the SAT in March (minimally).

Description: This course is designed with one goal in mind: self-actualization.  The course is a semester course where a math and english teacher works with the students on an every other day basis.  Students should register for either the Fall or Spring semester based on when they plan to take the SAT.  It is highly recommended that you take the course during the same semester that you plan to take the SAT.  Meeting one’s goal is attained through content developed and strategic intervention.  Innovative strategies, dynamic coursework and superior instruction are blended to deliver top-notch test prep designed to level the playing field.  Using a specialized textbook, a state-of-the-art online asynchronous study system and a unique approach to vocabulary building, this course takes students to their optimal scores.  

GODS, MONSTERS AND HEROES - 01580 - ½ CREDIT (SEM)

Prerequisite: Open to students in grades 9-10

Credit:  Elective

Angry gods. Cunning creatures. Mighty heroes. From the earliest cave paintings to the latest blockbuster films, people have been captivated by mythological themes.  Myths and folktales were created to make sense of humankind and our world and have become the foundation of the popular films, novels and television series of today.  Beginning with an overview of mythology and different kinds of folklore, students will journey with ancient men and women as they slay dragons, outwit gods, charge into battle, and confront monsters stronger than themselves. They will explore the universality and social significance of myths and folklore, and see how they influence popular culture today. Whether you are a student of mythology, history, film or simply a lover of stories, the course will provide an in-depth and engaging exploration of the tales that have captivated people of all cultures for thousands of years.

LYRICOLOGY  - 01450 - 1/2 CREDIT (SEM)

Prerequisite:  Open to students in grades 9-12

Credit: Elective

Description:  This course focuses on studying song lyrics as works of poetry independent of music.  Lyrics will be chosen from myriad songwriters and styles, reflecting historical events and individuals.  Students will learn the poetic techniques songwriters employ in composition, meanings implied in their use, and how the songs connect to students’ lives and current events.

COLLEGE  FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATION 100 - 01465 - 1/2 CREDIT (SEM)

Prerequisite: Open to students in grades 11-12.  

Credit: Elective

Description:  SPE 100 is designed to develop students' knowledge and skills pertaining to the fundamental theories, concepts, vocabulary, and practices related to the discipline of communication. Topic areas the course addresses include the process of communication, as well as verbal, nonverbal, listening, interpersonal, small group, intercultural, organizational, public and mediated forms of communication.  Students who successfully complete this course can obtain as many as 3 credits from Dutchess Community College at a reduced tuition.
