FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC   - 09200 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite:  Open to students in grades 10-12

Description:  This course is designed to develop the student's understanding of the structure and fundamentals of music. In the contexts of classical, jazz, and popular music styles, students will study topics from basic notation to harmonic and melodic analysis.  The ability to sight read and to take dictation of melodies and rhythms is also developed as part of the course. 


.COLLEGE/ADVANCED PLACEMENT MUSIC THEORY   - 09205 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite:  Intro to Music Theory or Teacher Recommendation

Description: This course builds on the foundation developed in Intro to Music Theory.  AP Music Theory integrates aspects of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, and, to some extent, history and style.  A special emphasis will be placed on further understanding of harmony.   Musicianship skills such as dictation and other listening skills, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony are a part of the course.  Students will develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score through the development of: aural skills, listening exercises, sight-singing skills, written skills, compositional skills, creative exercises and analytical skills.  AP Music Theory is recommended for any student planning to pursue music studies in College as well as those who desire it for enrichment.  For information regarding AP exam dates and fees, please visit the College Board website at http://www.collegeboard.org

COLLEGE PIANO   - 09210 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite:  Open to students in grades 10-12

Credit: Music

Description:  By the end of this class, students will be able to read and play music in various styles on the piano both in solo performance and in small ensembles. Students also will compose and improvise their own musical creations. Students do NOT have to own or rent a keyboard or piano to join this class.  This course is for beginners who would like to learn piano technique and the basics of music theory.  It is also well suited for instrumentalists (band/orchestra) and/or singers who would like to broaden their knowledge of music through a fun and challenging study of the piano.



PIANO II   - - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite: College Piano

Credit: Music

Piano II is designed for students who have taken and passed the College Piano course or by teacher recommendation. The year-long course is designed to further develop the concepts needed for piano performance in professional settings through an in-depth study of music theory and keyboard technique and their applications in a variety of repertoire ranging in works from Classical, Jazz, and Popular music.
