Unit 12: Specialist study in creative media production
Unit Aim: This unit will require students to research and critically examine the influence of historical and contemporary contexts on their own practice. The unit will enable the student to demonstrate a greater depth of understanding of their discipline and place within it.
Intent: To produce a piece of academic writing that reflects on your specialist skills, industry pipeline knowledge and the various job roles you've engaged with. The goal is to enhance your critical thinking, articulate your experiences, and deepen your understanding of the games design field.
Implementation: Through guidance on academic writing conventions, structuring reflective pieces, and writing exercises. You will refine your ability to express your insights coherently and academically.
Impact: You will strengthen your reflective and academic writing skills, gain a deeper awareness of your professional growth and develop a clearer understanding of how your skills and roles fit into the broader games art industry.
Soft skills: Critical thinking, communication, time management
Industry: This session directly aligns with industry expectations by emphasising the importance of reflective practice and effective communication - essential skills in the dynamic field of games art. It encourages you to align your academic understanding with real-world industry experiences.
SMSC: A supportive learning community. Reflecting on one's growth and contributions promotes moral awareness. Engaging in reflective practices provides students with a sense of purpose and accomplishment in their artistic and professional journey.
Be formal – avoid common, colloquial or spoken language
Avoid casual language such as:
Words like ‘stuff’, ’really’ and ‘things’
Phrases like ‘a bit’ and ‘sort of’
Sentence fragments and contractions including 'isn’t', 'didn’t', 'couldn’t', 'wouldn’t' and 'it’ll' 'etc.' to stand for et cetera – it is better to say 'for example...'
Using questions – try to structure your point as a full sentence
What do I do?
Go back through the work from previous weeks. You should find you've already done the research, answered most of the questions and have done the practical work needed! You'll still need to rework it and structure but the bulk of the work is already done. Whoop whoop!

Your writing must:
Use the template on classrooms
Be written in the academic style
Be no shorter than 1,500 words
Have a properly referenced bibliography

1. Essay Title
Does the essay have the full and correct essay title?
2. Introduction
Is there a significant introduction that identifies the topic, purpose and structure of the essay?
Are key words or concepts identified in the introduction?
3. Main Body
Is there plenty of evidence that you have done what you have set out to do?
Have you put each main point in a separate paragraph?
Are the paragraphs logically linked?
Is each main point/argument supported by evidence, argument or examples?
Are the ideas of others clearly referenced?
4. Conclusion
Is the conclusion directly related to the question?
Is it based on evidence and facts?
Does it summarise the main points?
Is it substantial (a paragraph or more)?
5. References
Have you referenced all of your sources?
Are all of the references accurate?
Are all of the references in the essay shown in the bibliography and vice versa?
6. Layout
Is it neat and legibly presented? San serif font, 12/14 size font unless there's reason
