Eco Friendly Action-

1. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. In 2020 we declared a climate emergency and we have developed an ambitious strategy to help us achieve our goal of carbon net-zero for carbon emissions from electricity and heating by 2030 and net-zero from all other emissions by 2035.

2. Our student run Green Lancaster society looks after 4000m2 nature based garden on campus with a focus on sustainable agriculture production. The site is home to 40 raised planting beds, a fruit tree orchard, greenhouses, a rescue chicken enclosure and beehives. The goal of the ECOHub is to produce local, healthy, organic produce all year around, with a “0 food miles” distribution focus.

3. Our on campus wind turbine provides enough energy to power 1200 homes for a year.

Lancaster recommends ways you can look after the environment

1. Avoid car transport where you can and use public transport instead. If you can walk or cycle to where you need to be that would be even better! :)

2. Shop sustainably and avoid buying products with plastic packaging where possible.

3. Monitor your electricity consumption and avoid leaving chargers, devices switched on permanently.

Top Tips for Students

  • Always look in detail at the modules of the course you're hoping to study - a degree at one institution will be completely different to the same degree elsewhere as each department will have specialists in different fields, so do your research and make sure it's going to keep you engaged!

  • Get involved in extra curricular activities now - they are great to develop skills which you can use as examples in personal statements or job applications, and university or job interviews further down the line!

  • University is full of opportunities, so say 'yes' to as much as possible - it is what you make it.

  • Study something you're passionate about

  • Don't be afraid to try something new at university

  • Ask as many questions as you can, about anything to do with university to your tutors, parents, supporters and friends
