National careers events
Running your careers activities alongside national events can give your careers programme focus and kudos. It shows other staff in schools and colleges that careers activities are an important part of the academic year and often come with branded resources to be used for the occasion. Other national days or weeks can also be used as a theme to which careers education is attached eg, sporting events, music festivals, health weeks or historical occasions.

Information for parents and carers
Parents and carers are known to be the single biggest influence on most – though by no means all – young people’s lives. Parents and carers, if they have the right information, can help schools and colleges reinforce important messages about their children’s future decisions. Parents and carers need to keep up to date with changes in education and training, however, and this is where these websites can help.

Labour Market Information (LMI) – general sites
Labour Market Information is vital in a careers programme so that young people are familiar with the world of work around them. Through the careful and targeted use of LMI in an institution the careers programme can give both important information about industry sectors, jobs forecasts and the skills and qualities employers look for in their workforce. Simple and useful LMI can also be found in some of the young people’s sites above such as icould.com, firstcareers.co.uk and startprofile.com.

PwC Virtual Lessons
PwC’s Back to Schools Tour.
Sessions are for year 12 and 13 students who are interested in a career in either Accounting or Technology. The sessions will last approximately 45 minutes each, including some time for questions. Students will hear from staff who are currently on or have completed a Flying Start degree programme with us, gain an insight into what we do at PwC and hear what opportunities are available to them at PwC. We have also been able to add some Business sessions to the line up and you can find the links to register for these in the same schedule.
These virtual sessions will take place between 28th September and the 2nd November 2020. If you have not yet registered and would like to attend a session you will find the link to do so in the schedule. If you are a teacher registering your class for a session, I would appreciate it if you could let me know approximately how many students will be attending.
Additionally I have also attached a worksheet for the accountancy session should you wish to print off prior to the accountancy session, although this is not necessary to enjoy the session!
If you have any students who don’t meet the above criteria and are keen to boost their employability skills and learn more about PwC, please direct them to our Virtual Classroom.
We look forward to meeting with you soon!
Kindest regards,
Pippa

Creating a Virtual Futures Fair
Click for a How-to Guide!
This is-
An invitation- would you/your students like to use the site?
- A "how-to-guide"- for a virtual careers fair
Preparation-
Email 6 months in advance to announce your real and/or Virtual Futures Fair and request and gather the information you need at that point.
Difficult for companies to be on board in a pandemic so I focused on the tricky linking curriculum to careers as well as FE/HE (Gatsby 4 and 7) for the launch in October 2020, then I tried again to include companies in a World of Work Zone for a re-launch in National Careers Week in March 2021
We continue to collaborate with institutions and companies to populate a website with all the info they gave us.
We built the website on Google Sites
We are delighted that so many companies/institutions have collaborated with us to offer our Dame Allan’s Virtual Futures Fair- the first of virtual careers fairs run by a school in the north east.
Via the the virtual stands/exhibitor pages, the institutions are expecting increased Q&A via their email addresses and live chat facilities
There was a FREE pass/use of JED and Panjango courtesy of these companies being on our Virtual Futures Fair website when we launched in October
Any students, staff, parents, delegates can use the link to a comments form at the bottom of each page- helpful feedback . We rely on lots of feedback - suggestions, additions, changes. PLEASE give feedback!
Top tips-
Preparation
Must be in the school calendar
Virtual Futures Fair assembly
Goody bags of resources, merchandise (and sweets of courses) for every form class on the V-Futures Fair launch date
Tweets/Social Media and Press Release
Letters to parents, teachers, students
Launch of Futures Fair website- ensure it's easily accessible on your school website
Futures Fair Goody Bag for every form class- try to fill the gap of freebies the students love at the real on site Fairs
Direct students to specific pages in form class/lessons
Live Chats / Q&A with Careers Department
Join Twitter: @CareersatDAS
In house live event- we had an in house Healthcare Live Streamed Event for the launch and numerous other live "A Future in...." events in National Careers Week
Build in activities in form time, lessons and own time, so that students can investigate their interests and contact institutions directly
Sharing of the Virtual Futures Fair website
We are sharing the website with you, if you like it!
In return for sharing, I just encourage a message on the feedback form, please so we can see who is using it in their school and where you are located
Be aware it has a focus on the north east LMI and we thank the north east LEP for all their many contributions
Our first invites went out to our local partner schools as we would have normally invited their students to our real event on site.
This continues to be a BIG project and we have learnt a lot along the way! I had a vision for the V-Futures Fair and this was the outcome after many hours, and we are still continuing to update it. We really appreciate your help with any suggestions/additions as all the information will support and inspire students from other schools especially across the north east.
Good luck with your events and we'd love to see your virtual careers fairs too.
I would highly recommend you need another person to support. Everyone needs a Jen Scobie- our Sixth form, HE and Careers Administrator - to support these events whether virtual or real.
I thank Jen for all her hard work and brilliant support on this project with me.
