Liverpool University eco friendly aims-

1. The University of Liverpool aims to achieve net-zero carbon by 2035 with a carbon management strategy including sustainable aspects of our estate such as our Energy Centre (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/sustainability/our-sustainable-university/energy-and-carbon/);

2. The University is committed to enhancing on-campus biodiversity by enriching habitat and species-rich green spaces across campus (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/sustainability/our-sustainable-university/biodiversity/)

3. The University of Liverpool strives to minimise waste including food and water waste, diverting waste from landfill to 'waste-to-energy' plants and offering on-campus composting (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/sustainability/our-sustainable-university/waste-and-recycling/).

Liverpool's recommendations for you to look after the environment-

1. Eat sustainably by shopping 'zero-waste', using local food outlets, cook more yourself and donate surplus food (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/sustainability/get-involved/students/)

2. Save energy by turning off plugs not in use, putting extra layers on during cold periods rather than relying on heating and practising 'kitchen etiquette', such as not overfilling the kettle with water you're not going to use (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/sustainability/get-involved/tips-to-be-more-sustainable/save-energy/)

3. Support biodiversity through 'Save the Bees' and 'Save the Hedgehogs' volunteering opportunities, as well as feeding birds and diversify any plants you have around you (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/sustainability/get-involved/tips-to-be-more-sustainable/support-biodiversity/).

Top Tips for Students

  • Visit Open Days (both virtual and physical) - it's 100% the best way to get the feel of the university and to gain knowledge from those teaching and studying with you!

  • Ask as many questions as you can about all aspects of university life, maybe even write out some questions that you can copy-and-paste at different events and open days?

  • Do some self-reflection - this will help with your personal statement, look at what you've done in your life so far and what you enjoy doing, then see what skills and values you can pull from those - you'll be amazed at what you've achieved!

  • Make sure to check MODULE CONTENT as each university likely does similar/the same 'degrees' but different 'modules' (topics) within each one - e.g. History but only Modern topics, no Medieval

  • Check for any 'schools councils' that your subject may be involved with (e.g. Medical Schools Council) that could advertise key values and ethics and practices within that field of work, which students could improve on whilst at university

  • Speak with current students online and in-person and ask for honest feedback on university life - you want to be sure you fully understand what to do and what you're getting in to!
