Year 10

Introduction

The curriculum at Bendigo South East College follows the Victorian Curriculum F – 10. This curriculum, developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), “is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.” The Victorian Curriculum F – 10 also incorporates the Australian curriculum, whilst reflecting the key priority areas and standards for Victorian students.

Bendigo South East College also offers a small range of Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Vocational Educational Training (VET) based subjects for Year 10 students. Teachers follow the subject specific study design published by the VCAA to construct learning centred upon the set knowledge and skills described. VET subjects knowledge and skills is derived from following the relevant industry-based training package regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

As students move into Years 7 and 8, Bendigo South East College curriculum and subject offerings have a focus on students experiencing a broad range of subject areas and building key knowledge and skills across these offerings. Within Year 9 and 10 students are provided with increasing opportunities to exercise choice. We encourage students to consider their Year 10 program as a strong grounding for their last two years of senior secondary education.

Subject Availability

While subjects are offered within this Course Selection Guide, once students undertake their subject selections, BSE will make decisions about running subjects based on the demand and resources for each subject. Subjects selected by a small number of students may be withdrawn. When a subject is withdrawn, students will be notified and their back-up subject choices will be used and/or further course counselling will be undertaken.

Learning and Student Attendance

Bendigo South East College expects students to maintain a strong attendance record. There is significant research that indicates students who miss 5-10% of days in any given year will have significantly lower levels of performance in Literacy and Numeracy. In future years the gaps in knowledge and skills are rarely made up. Strong attendance provides continuity in student’s learning.

Bendigo South East College will work with parents to provide support for a continuation of essential student learning if a student has some short-term absence (up to approximately 2-3 weeks) as a result of illness or injury. For absences that extend beyond this period, student needs are considered on a case-by-case basis, but parents need to be aware that the school is not equipped, nor able to support an “at-home” learning program for students for any great length of time. The school does not provide an individual learning program as part of the student’s absence due to a holiday during the term.

Students’ Attendance in VCE and VET Subjects

At times, students or their families seek to take holidays during the school term. When a student begins to select VCE or VET subjects there are clear attendance expectations that are required by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority. The school is not able to make allowances for students seeking to miss school for a family holiday or attendance at a single day non-school-based activity. Students who elect to participate in a holiday while undertaking VCE or VET studies, place themselves at considerable risk of failing VCE subjects they are undertaking. A student missing a day to attend an event such as a concert in Melbourne cannot request that school-assessed coursework (SAC) be rescheduled. If this situation occurred the student would not be scored for this SAC and may risk failing the subject. As per our VCE policy, students must attend at least 90% of classes in total across the year. For more information about VCE subjects please read our VCE policy.

Subject Fees

The final list of fees/charges will be included in the 2024 book lists which are distributed later in the year.

VCE Art Making & Exhibiting - Units 1 & 2

Subject Length: 2 semesters

Subject Fee: $30

VCE Art Making and Exhibiting explores a range of art materials, processes and techniques to further develop skills to create and present artworks. Students learn how to apply an effective art making process in a visual arts journal while developing their artworks, as well as analyse and research a range of artworks and art exhibitions. In Art Making and Exhibiting students will strengthen and broaden their art-making, curatorial, analytical and creative thinking skills, as well as their interpersonal and communication skills through reflection and discussion.

Visiting and viewing exhibitions and displays of artwork is a necessary part of this study. It helps students understand how artworks are displayed and exhibitions are curated. It also has an influence on the students’ own practice, and encourages them to broaden and develop their own ideas and thinking around their own art making.

Unit 1: Semester 1 – Explore, expand and investigate

In this unit students explore materials, techniques and processes in a range of art forms. They expand their knowledge and understanding of the characteristics, properties and application of materials used in art making. They explore selected materials to understand how they relate to specific art forms and how they can be used in the making of artworks. Students also explore the historical development of specific art forms and investigate how the characteristics, properties and use of materials and techniques have changed over time. Throughout their investigation students become aware of and understand the safe handling of materials they use.

ASSESSMENT
Outcome 1: Visual Arts journal
Students record and document art making in the Visual Arts journal using written and visual material.

Outcome 2: Finished artworks

Students develop at least one finished artwork from the experimental works completed in their Visual Arts Journal.

Outcome 3: Information for an exhibition

Students present information about three Australian artists, including at least one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist, and at least one artwork by each artist as a review of an exhibition visited or viewed.

Unit 2: Semester 2 – Understand, develop and resolve

In this unit students continue to research how artworks are made by investigating how artists use aesthetic qualities to represent ideas in artworks. They broaden their investigation to understand how artworks are displayed to audiences, and how ideas are represented to communicate meaning.

Students respond to a set theme and progressively develop their own ideas. Students learn how to develop their ideas using materials, techniques and processes, and art elements and art principles. They consolidate these ideas to plan and make finished artworks, reflecting on their knowledge and understanding of the aesthetic qualities of artworks. The planning and development of at least one finished artwork are documented in their Visual Arts journal.

Students begin to understand how exhibitions are planned and designed and how spaces are organised for exhibitions. They also investigate the roles associated with the planning of exhibitions and how artworks are selected and displayed in specific spaces. This offers students the opportunity to engage with exhibitions, whether they are in galleries, museums, other exhibition spaces or site-specific spaces.

 ASSESSMENT
Outcome 1: Thematic exhibition

Students design and curate a thematic exhibition of six artworks:

Outcome 2: Experimental artworks and documentation

Students explore aesthetic qualities and the use of materials, techniques and processes in artworks. They produce a series of experimental artworks based on subject matter and ideas in response to a teacher-selected theme or a theme developed from class investigation and discussion.

Outcome 3: Finished artworks

Students present at least one finished artwork, with accompanying documentation of the development and refinement of art making, in their Visual Arts journal. The artwork(s) is developed from the experimental works made in Area of Study 2.

What type of work is done?

In Units 1 & 2, students explore a range of art forms, materials, techniques and processes in a visual arts journal in order to make and present artworks for exhibitions. Students will also research a range of artists and art exhibitions to inform their own art-making and to create and plan exhibitions. A range of artist workshops and educational talks for specific exhibition case studies will also be covered.
