Introduction to Sociology

Sociology explores human behaviour and social relationships in order to understand the society we live in. Students will explore what sociology is as well as famous sociologists and their research. Students will then undertake sociological research, working as a group to create a survey to test their ideas on a topic such as the impact of technology. Students will work both collaboratively and individually to investigate the area studied.
What is studied?
Student learning is based upon the following key knowledge and concepts:
Sociology – what this term means and what is studied in this subject
Socialisation
Sociological theories
Famous sociologists and what has already been studied
Quantitative and qualitative data – how it is gathered and how data is interpreted
What type of work is done?
Within this subject student learning is developed and assessed through:
Individual research of a famous sociologist – students choose a multimodal presentation method to present their findings
Collaborative group task – as a class select a topic, create a group survey, gather data and present findings
Future Pathways:
This subject will be a valuable pathway to VCE Sociology Units 1- 4. Students may even choose to study Units 3 & 4 Sociology without completing Units 1 & 2 as part of their VCE or VM journey.
Studying Sociology opens up a range of careers in areas such as welfare, education, social research, and local and central government. Jobs directly related to a degree in Sociology include: Advice Worker, Community Development Worker, Teacher, Housing Manager/Officer, Marketing Executive, Police Officer, Policy Officer, Social Researcher and Youth Worker just to name a few.
