The Steps to take to secure
WORK EXPERIENCE
(including Safe@Work OHS certificates)
BELOW is a helpful guide to support you to arrange your own work experience:
IF YOU'RE REALLY STUCK and don't know where to start, use this guide below:
(includes making PHONE CALLS or EMAILS... although approaching a business in person is BEST!)
Check out the list BELOW of past businesses where BSE students have had successful placements:
BEFORE you approach a workplace...
Before you organise work experience, visit the Careers Hub to discuss your idea.
In general, most large organisations, eg. Bendigo Health, St John of God, Bendigo Bank, Thales, etc all require enquiries to be done by the Careers Hub and students cannot approach them individually.
All other places - e.g. schools, early learning centres, trades, retail, legal, gyms, hospitality, etc - you will need to approach them yourself.
Before you approach the workplace you must:
Know your dates: CLICK HERE
Have the correct paperwork and be familiar with it. Have your sections completed.
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is similar to Work Experience, but is connected to your VET subject. It allows you to be more 'hands-on' and practise the skills you are learning in VET (e.g. building and construction).
***IF THIS IS YOU, please see the Careers Hub team ASAP as your requirements are different***
Safe@Work - OHS requirements
Prior to commencing work experience, you must satisfactorily complete occupational health and safety (OHS) training.
You must complete x2 safe@work modules/certificates.
OHS General Module
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/students/beyond/Pages/generalmodule.aspx
OHS Industry-Specific Module
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/students/beyond/Pages/industrymodule.aspx
(choose the most appropriate industry that matches where you want to do work experience)
Unfortunately, you cannot attend Work Experience without having completed these.
STEPS:
Use Microsoft Edge if you can, NOT Chrome (it’s been glitching)
For each module above:
Click on the module link (ABOVE)
Click in and out of the little subheadings on each page
When you’re ready, click on the right of the screen – ‘self assessment test’ (https://www.vic.gov.au/safework/safework-self-assessment-tests)
Carefully fill in your correct details (correct spelling and capitals in the right places, as this prints on your certificate)
Choose the right certificate in the drop-down box
Complete the test
Save the certificate when you pass (scroll up there is a little save disk)
UPLOAD these to the work experience portal (check email for the link) OR
PRINT and put in the paperwork pack before returning to the Careers Hub OR
EMAIL both certificates to Steph J
DO THIS PROCESS FOR BOTH MODULES ABOVE.
