Outdoor Education
Subject Length: 1 semester
Subject Fee: $80 (Cost subject to change)
Outdoor Education is for students who have a passion for the outdoors and the impact we are having on the environment. Students have the opportunity to build on their navigational skills, canoeing ability, understanding of minimal impact strategies and how we can create a more sustainable environment. The students comfortability and skills will be put to the test when students engage in ongoing practical experiences throughout the semester.
What is studied?
Within this subject student learning is based upon the following key knowledge and concepts:
Safe Participation and Teamwork: safe participation in outdoor activities as well as working cooperatively with others to achieve common goals.
Risks and Motivations: analyse and minimise risks in outdoor activities as well as describe motivations and personal responses that people have to outdoor environments and activities.
Healthy Outdoor Environments: students will be able to describe what makes an environment healthy or unhealthy, why healthy outdoor environments are important and some of the causes of an unhealthy environment.
Safe and Positive Participation in Practical Elements: Effective preparation and participation is required in activities such as first aid, risk management in the outdoors, minimal impact practices, bushwalking, canoeing, navigation, orienteering and cooking skills.
What type of work is done?
Within this subject student learning is developed and assessed through:
Ongoing observational assessment and application within practical activities and course work.
Participation in course Excursions (NB: User pays)
Ongoing Formative Assessment tasks in relation to Minimal Impact Strategies and Sustainability, Trangia Cooking, Canoeing and First Aid components of the course.
Summative assessment tasks in relation to the course theory work and class practical activities. These may vary in response to term structure, pupil free days/public holidays and weather for practical activities.
At the conclusion of the Outdoor Education unit students will also be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the course as a whole through our end of Semester Exam.
