Introduction to History

In this unit students will be immersed in an introduction to History. They will develop their historical skills and knowledge, including how to evaluate the historical significance of world events and how civilisations have changed. The first unit will look at the Ancient World (e.g. Rome, Greece) and the second unit will cover aspects of Modern Australia (e.g. conflict, local history).
What is studied?
Student learning is based upon the following key knowledge and concepts:
Life in an ancient society
The rise and fall of ancient empires – Greece and Rome
Key moments that shaped modern Australia
Significant Australians in times of change and conflict
Evaluating the historical significance of events, places, people and ideas
Analysing how life and societies have changed or remained the same over time
What type of work is done?
Within this subject student learning is developed and assessed through:
Historical research tasks
Developing questions to assess historical significance
Comparative analysis of the ancient and modern world
Future Pathways:
This subject will introduce students to some of the context and content for VCE History units, including Ancient History, Modern History, and Australian History, as well as Classical Studies. Future career paths include archaeology, tourism operations, museum curation, anthropology, criminology, and education.
