Media Studies
Subject Length: 1 semester

In Year 10 Media, students will also undergo workshops on sound, cinematography, lighting and editing to build their skills and confidence in the filmmaking process. These workshops are practical, hands-on skills with cameras, tripods, microphones, video switchers, and editing software. The tasks are designed to up-skill students in what happens behind the camera, providing confidence in recording and editing video. Students will be set ‘real-life’ challenges to meet production deadlines and manage a small team to complete set tasks. They will also develop skills in analysing and responding to a wide range of video content. Students will also gain some understanding of the pathways and careers that exist in the media industry.

What type of work is done?
Within this subject student learning is developed and assessed through:
Demonstration of Practical skills through short exercises.
Elements of Film; Students study short excerpts from films and improve their ability to identify how the Elements of Film are used and manipulated to create an effect.
Design Process; Pre-Production work to create a narrative and guidelines to create a short film.
Film Production; Create a short film using skills and knowledge gained from the practical training and understanding of Elements and following their Design Process.

Future Pathways: Completion of year 10 Media Arts will allow students to proceed to VCE Unit 1-4 and related VET applied certificate.
