College Internship Programs
INST 6.0
AOB schools partnering with college internship programs are required to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Department of Catholic Schools and Child Youth Protective Office.
Purpose:
To foster professional interaction and mutually beneficial collaboration between local university education programs and AOB schools.
To allow mentor teachers and teacher candidates to gain knowledge through the shared experience of student engagement in learning.
To build a high-quality teacher pipeline for our AOB schools.
Commentary/Procedural Points:
The DCS team will be responsible for contacting local universities and AOB schools to oversee the logistics and plan the implementation of the internship program.
Placement of teacher candidates and interns in the schools must be approved by the Associate Superintendent.
In accordance with A Statement of Policy for the Protection of Children and Youth, interns shall be treated as non- archdiocesan educational providers.
Per Section 3.7.3 of A Statement of Policy, the college should provide documentation of the satisfactory completion of a criminal history screening.
The college provides this documentation to the Department of Catholic Schools and to the Compliance Coordinator in the Office of Child and Youth Protection.
Non-archdiocesan educational providers must complete child protection training. To complete this requirement, interns register in VIRTUS as independent contractors and by completing the online training.
Given the interns are not employees/volunteers, it is the responsibility of the college to review the criminal history screening results and secure references.
All paperwork and necessary documentation must be completed before teacher candidate/intern can begin placement in a school.
