Medical Cannabis
HE 10.0
The school will allow administration of medical cannabis to students while on school property.
Purpose:
To comply with state regulations.
Commentary/Procedure:
As of January 1, 2021, the MSDE and the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission jointly developed guidelines for public schools allowing the administration of medical cannabis during school hours and school-sponsored activities and while on a school bus to students who are qualifying patients. (See following guidelines.) The Archdiocese of Baltimore will mirror the state guidelines.
Allowing medical cannabis on school grounds ensures that treated students are able to attend school and school activities while not disrupting their treatment.
A school nurse MAY NOT be required to administer medical cannabis to a student who is a qualifying patient.
A student who is a cannabis patient may only obtain medical cannabis through a caregiver or any designated school personnel authorized to administer medical cannabis to the student in accordance with these (following) guidelines.
