HE 11.0
Purpose:
Authorize the school nurse and trained personnel to obtain, maintain, and administer a bronchodilator to students, whether they have a known respiratory condition or not, experiencing or believed to be experiencing asthma symptoms or respiratory distress (excluding prekindergarten students).
Commentary/Procedural Points:
· The principal (or designee) and school nurse/medical professional collaborate to identify and authorize staff for training.
· Schools select appropriate staff (e.g., medication technicians) to support the nurse and complete required training.
· A signed standing order from a physician is required to obtain medication.
· Schools must maintain an emergency supply of bronchodilators and delivery devices (e.g., inhalers with spacers) from a licensed source.
· The principal, with the school nurse, determines appropriate storage locations (including the health suite and additional strategic areas).
· All incidents and care must be documented in the student health record (PowerSchool or equivalent).
· Schools must notify parents and guardians of students with known medical conditions that they are required to provide prescribed medications in accordance with the student’s health care provider’s written instructions and ensure that medications remain current and available for the student’s use.
