Below are five constant pressure maps. In the top row are the height contours. In the bottom row are the winds. Your task is to match the height contours with the correct winds.
To make things a little bit interesting, I've removed the map backgrounds. All you know is that all the maps are approximately the same scale. Also, I've taken maps from several different pressure levels. Finally, the contour intervals are different on different maps.
Aaugh!! How do I do this?! Well, don't panic. Remember the basic rules:
- Winds are parallel to the height contours, with lower heights to the left.
- Wind speeds are proportional to the strength of the height gradient.
- (this is a hint, not a rule) If you read the height contour labels, you can get both the altitude and the strength of the height gradient.
