Vertical velocity, in tenths of microbars per second. Don't worry too much about how big this is, just pay attention to the relative magnitudes. Positive is defined as upward; anything over 30 or so is significant and anything over 100 is serious. In the example below, the forecast calls for upward motion, followed by downward motion, followed by not much vertical motion at all.
