The most fully decoded format available in the weather interface is called, appropriately enough, Metarfulldecode
. It presents the weather elements in plain, easy-to-read sentences. Two problems: the weather report is not always decoded correctly, and if you're looking at a lot of observations that's an awful lot of words to have to wade through.
Here's a typical decoded observation from Sept. 4, 1996, from METARFULLDECODE:
METARFULLDECODE> clt 12z The weather observed at CHARLOTTE (CLT) at 06:50 AM CDT was: The skies were overcast The weather reported was a thunderstorm, heavy showers of rain, moderate showers of rain and mist. Temperature: 66F (19C) Dewpoint: 66F (19C) Relative Humidity: 100% Winds from the NW (330 degs) at 10 mph. Pressure: 1015.2 millibars. Altimeter:29.99 inches of mercury and rising. The prevailing visibility was: 4.0 miles. The amount of precipitation recorded in the last 3 hours was 0.72 inches. The amount of precipitation recorded in the last 24 hours was just a trace.
Nice, easy to read, but rather wordy and limited, and also slightly wrong. Can you spot the errors? (hint, some are trick questions)
