Netflix’s Bridgerton created by Chris Dan Husen and based on Julia Quinn’s novels has been regarded by many as sensational and thrilling. Much like the books, you will find intricate story lines, witty and intelligent dialogue, as well as complex and honorable characters within each season. The creators provided us with the work of art that is the story telling of the past with truth, positive role models, and crucial life lessons.
Bridgerton’s plot revolves around the eponymous Bridgerton family and is set in the competitive world of Regency era London's ton during the social season where marriageable youth of nobility and gentry are launched into society. The first season of the television series follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter, as she searches for true love and a marital match. Setting the bar high after tying the knot with the Duke of Hastings, the second season follows Daphne’s older brother, Anthony, as he feels the pressure to uphold the family name and find a partner.
Having kept up with this series for the past three years, I can assure that it’s nothing short of marvelous. Surprisingly for the time period of this drama, characters are diverse in terms of ethnicity, race, and sexuality. However, in satirical terms, the show tells women that they need to never be alone with a man, to avoid reading “too much”, and that they are born for the purpose of marriage. By showing the audience this, we begin to understand more about the time period and just how different things were then compared to now. Along with all of the mistakes the characters make and dilemmas they get themselves into, positive themes are introduced. This includes obligations and duties one has to their family, concept of honor, and living up to the standards of society. Although the Netflix original takes place so long ago, the conversation is comprehensible and they even play instrumental versions of modern songs in the ballroom scenes. Arguably, I believe the second season was much better than the previous due to its plot twists and complications. When a story is filled with predicaments and drama, it hooks the reader much more than with a plain comedy. The characters being young and attractive makes the intrigue that much better. It’s like watching the Kardashians in the 1800’s, if they had meaningful and noteworthy conversation. Not to mention that the clothing is much more beautiful with corsets and intricate detailing.
At eight episodes each season averaging at an hour each, the story will completely engulf and submerge you into a fussy gown and courtly manners. You are bound to fall in love with the charming personalities of the cast, the humorous and dramatic conversations, and complicated yet passionate romance.
