Most girls know to keep a lookout when in public alone, the constant checking of surroundings, double takes at everyone who walks by, listening for footsteps behind you, are instincts girls learn as they grow older; one can imagine the fright girls feel when out alone during the day, now imagine it during the night. Emma was implementing these methods on her long eerie walk home from her friend’s house one cold September night; after this night, her life was never the same.
As Emma was wrapping up her night at her friend Charleigh’s house, she really did not want to walk all the way home.
“Are you sure your parents said I am not allowed to sleep here?” asked Emma
Char responded with,
“You know I wish you could, but rules are rules, I have to wait until the weekend, parents’ rules.” Emma collected her belongings, let out a loud sigh, and made her way to the front door with Charleigh. As Emma made her way home, she noticed how crisp and refreshing the cold air was, and she decided to take the long way home. She knew her small town like the back of her hand, every crook and cranny was not only known, but studied by Emma. She made her way down the road, busted a right, then a left into her secret shortcut home through the woods. The leaves crinkled and crunched as she walked deeper into the creepy woods. As Emma went deeper, her surroundings grew darker, until she could only make out dark figures. Although Emma could easily be put in the “scared of nothing” category; due to the lack of moonlight in the woods, Emma began to become frightened of what she could not see; she quickly turned her head to check every noise, every branch falling, cricket chirping, everything; even the subtle sound of the leaves falling.
“Emmmmma”, she claimed she heard; Emma wasn't sure if it was her own imagination or a real person.
“Hello. Who's there?” she asked in the darkness. She got no response. Emma began to speed up until she heard it again,
“I see you, Emma, you cannot hide from me”
Emma, extremely astonished, wondering who, or what being, could be calling her name proceeded to turn her walk into a full sprint. Breaking a sweat, Emma ran through the woods, the condensation of the grass getting on her pants, the cold, crinkly leaves getting caught in her shoes; as Emma lost energy she began to slow down. As she was about to reach the entrance to her road, she started to hear footsteps…she looked around and did not see anyone; in curiosity, she decided to go off-trail and follow the noise.
“Is anyone there”, she asked again. No response. Emma began to see a figure in the distance. Her heart dropped and her entire body went numb, the figure began walking towards her.
“Don’t panic, everything is going to be okay”, was muttered by a familiar, calming voice.
“Who are you? You”, Emma asked.
The figure walked into the sliver of moonlight, Emma focused her eyes but saw her reflection, or so she thought. As the figure got closer Emma realized how much this thing looked like her.
“I have been waiting to see you forever.”
“Who are you?” Emma asked,
“I should have been you, but no! I am Remma; I am your twin, but when we were born you got taken in by a loving family and I was stuck in foster care, then the streets, now I can finally get what I deserve.” Emma’s heart dropped and she sprinted away,
“YOU’RE NOT GETTING AWAY THIS TIME!”, screamed the figure, Emma tried to escape but never made it out of the woods. Not that anyone realized though, since she had been replaced.
