Statistics from Forbes magazine claim that there were 396 deaths from texting and driving within the year of 2020. These scary deaths are completely unnecessary. Why do we live in a world where people choose texting over living a long life? By texting and driving, people are threatening the safety of strangers every time they drive. Among the many words that can describe this terrible act, selfish, stupid, and ignorant are just a few.
Texting and driving is the main reason for car accidents. Edgar Snyder found that “1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving”. If this is the case, why is texting and driving still a thing? It shouldn’t be. A solution to this problem would be for phones to automatically not work when driving. Although this may sound difficult to actually put into practice, technology today is capable of anything. They also claim that texting and driving takes away your attention for five seconds. Five seconds where anything could happen. Someone can run in front of your car, lose control of theirs, or even brake check you. The possibilities are endless. Texting and driving should be more enforced.
Despite all the evidence going against texting and driving, there are still many who continue to do it. Some of these people even argue that it does not affect their driving. In reality, it does not matter how good of a driver someone is, their driving is still going to be negatively impacted if they are on their phone. For these people to claim that it is still safe is completely ignorant. Texting and driving will continue to cause thousands of deaths if something is not done about it. All the billboards and advertisements against it are never going to be enough. There needs to be a strong action taken against it.
