With spring coming to a close and crops beginning to sprout, the many farmers markets of New Jersey will begin to receive a large surplus of consumers in search of fresh produce and various other goods. While there is no exact date to suggest when the first ever farmers market was established, it is made clear that over the course of history, people gathered to trade fresh crops, goods and culture in a central and typically fixed area. Today in New Jersey, there stands several different farmers markets each showcasing their own unique facade and atmosphere.
Columbus Farmers Market
Location: Columbus, NJ
A Brief History
In 1929, brothers Henry, Iring and Frank Tallman purchased 30 acres of land in Columbus, NJ for the sole purpose of auctioning off various types of livestock. As the years went on, the Tallman family no longer wished to be in control of the acreage and sold it all off to the Township of Columbus who decided to construct a farmers market on the land. Eventually, an offer was put in for the land by an unknown buyer which was accepted by the township. This unknown buyer then proceeded to purchase over 200 acres of surrounding land and began the expansion of the Columbus Farmers Market which was eventually finished in 1989 and continues to expand up to this current day.
