Wow! Week Five already?

Post date: Oct 11, 2013 9:45:55 PM

We have had another busy week filled with fun and learning. Although we're watching with delight as our apple seeds sprout and grow, we have moved from our study of the apple cycle to bugs. Our calendar pattern has to do with ladybugs and spiders and we are singing spider songs, reading spider books and learning fun little spider facts. Next week in preparation for our trip to the pumpkin patch, we will be learning about the pumpkin cycle and also about life on a farm.

In math we're continuing our study of geometry and are sorting all kinds of things by a variety of different attributes. At our math stations we have starting moving from the 'free exploration" to working on completing specific tasks.

On Friday we got to meet with our big buddies and they helped us with a fun craft activity.

In Language Arts we added three new heart words this week:

you am and

Your children are very excited to read you the two new books we worked on this week. The books came home today to go into treasure boxes after your kids have had a chance to read them to you. At this stage for many kindergarteners, our main goal is to simply make them believe they are readers and to build their confidence. The books we are "reading" contain several of the heart words that they are memorizing so for the kiddos who aren't decoding or sounding out words yet, they can still "read" these books.

We have been learning to tell stories through pictures in our Writer's Workshop and boy do these kids have a lot of great stories to tell! They will begin adding more and more words to their stories as their written language skills grow.

Just a friendly reminder... Your child's Friday Folder comes home each Friday. Please empty the contents and help your child get into the routine of bringing the folder back to school on Monday.

The teachers in the classroom across from ours have asked me to remind you that learning is happening in that room during our 12:00 pick-up time. They would be grateful if you could hold your conversations elsewhere and keep your voices down while in that space.

Have a wonderful weekend!
