Happy New Year

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and a bit of extra family time!

Since winter break we have sure been busy beavers – both figuratively and literally. For our science unit we are finishing up our investigation of how organisms change the environment to meet their needs, and we have been building a beaver dam in the garden. We’ve discovered many ways in which organisms impact the environment both positively and negatively. Next up will be our big Chinese New Year unit.

This week in math we introduced all kinds of new games to play! We are moving toward more addition and subtraction along with being able to write the equations to go with the mathematical process. One of the games, The Forest Game, will come home as homework this week. For this game, children have to switch between adding acorns or subtracting acorns depending on what they spin. In our other games, we are working on sums to five, ten, and even twenty - of course using objects to help us count and keep track of our sums as we go.

We sure are reading up a storm! I sent home a list of the heart words that we have studied in depth in class in Friday Folders. It’s quite an impressive list. Your kiddos are such eager and determined little readers. It’s amazing to see their growth.

We continue to build our pen pal relationships with our high school big buddies in preparation for our zoo trip. And we enjoy our Friday time with our 3rd grade big buddies. This week we practiced reading our newest heart word books to them.

I know many of the kids are really enjoying doing the iReady at home. That extra reinforcement is very beneficial. If you need your child’s log in information again, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Here’s to another fun week of playing and learning!
