Week of April 6, 2015

We've had another busy week. Our focus letter was "O" so, of course, we had to read a story about an octopus and a few stories that were set in ocean. In Gentle Giant Octopus, we learned a lot of facts about the octopus and how it lives. Then we read some fun, imaginative stories about the sea creatures who live in the Jellyfish Hotel. These stories were a lot of fun and they helped reinforce some of the facts we learned about being an octopus. We added several new heart words including what and want. We have been writing up a storm and today we wrote stories about things we want so we could practice using our new heart words.

In Math, we added some more stations to our rotation. We now have "Money March" where we race a friend to the barn by adding different amounts of pennies and nickels along the way. We also have "Race You to 15 Cents". In this game, we practice gathering enough pennies to trade out for nickels. When we have enough for 15 cents, we win the game.

Our April calendar is all about different measuring tools. We've had fun using scales and rulers to measure length and weight.

In Social Studies we have started our unit on Community Helpers and have learned about Firefighters, policemen, veterinarians, doctors, nurses, paramedics, and ambulance drivers. We even read a story about a police dog and had a fun discussion about how he was a hero and a community helper.

We also had the privilege of watching the fifth graders give their presentations on the solar system and outer planets. They had lots of information to share, great posters to look at, and they even had mini quizzes that tested our knowledge and listening skills. I have to say that it was really wonderful to see the interactions between the 5th graders and the kindergarteners.

Have a wonderful weekend!
