It's hard to believe it's 2015. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! The kids hit the ground running upon returning to school after the break.

In Language Arts we have continued working on the elements of a story and have created our own story boards based on our comparison study of The Little Red Hen books. The kids created their own settings, characters and action. Next week will will look at how stories have a beginning, a middle and an end and will add a conclusion to our story boards. We will keep working on translating this into our Writer's Workshop stories.

We reviewed all of the letter sounds that we have learned so far this year and added the letter N to our Alphabet Cheer. The verse for the letter N is:

N says "N"

We also reviewed all of the Heart Words learned so far this year and added:

A new Heart Word book went home in Friday folders. Please be sure to ask your child to read it to you and have them practice reading it to as many "friends" (family members, cats, dogs, stuffed animals, siblings, etc.) as possible. They can add it to their Treasure box for reading in their Book Nooks. The kids are like little sponges right now and are just ready to take off with their reading. It is so exciting to see the light bulbs going on.

In Math we are working on Doubles (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, etc.), and odd and even numbers. We are breaking apart the number ten to make subtraction equations and are looking at all of the ways put numbers together to make 10. We added several new math station games to practice building and writing combinations of 10. We also learned about Growing Patterns and built several of them to practice counting by twos.

In Social Studies we learned about some of the New Years traditions we have in our country, and next week we will begin our big unit on China and the Chinese New Year.
