Gung Hay Fat Choy!

We came back from winter break and hit the ground running. Right off the bat we celebrated our 70th day of kindergarten by counting by tens and making cereal necklaces with 7 groups of ten fruit loops. In math we have been counting to 100 by 2's, 5's, and 10's, and I'm sure your child would love to show you what they've learned. We are also beginning to move from concrete addition and subtraction problems to the more abstract written equations. We have also started looking at money. Our geometric patterns are getting more and more complex as we identify hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses and triangles in growing patterns. We have been having fun making predictions and trying to figure out what will come next.

In reading we added two new heart words this week: THIS and OR

Much of our reading has been on the topic of the Chinese New Year which is our big unit of study right now. We have been learning all about China and the traditions surrounding the Chinese New Year celebration. We have been comparing our calendar to the Chinese Zodiac calendar. We've been learning about the different zodiac animals and are excited to welcome in the Year of the Horse. We have learned how to say a few words in Mandarin and we even tried writing some Chinese characters. We've been busy making lanterns and banners to decorate and prepare for the new year.

On Friday, January 31st we will be concluding our Chinese New Year celebration with a parade around the school beginning at 11:10. You are invited to attend the parade if you would like. We will then return to the classroom to enjoy some cookies and clementines before we head to lunch. If you would like to contribute cookies (almond cookies or fortune cookies) or clementine oranges, please let me know.

Enjoy the long weekend!
