Bacillus Coagulans เป็นจุลินทรีย์ชนิดที่ดีที่สามารถผลิตกรดแลคติกได้ จึงมักถูกจัดประเภทเป็นกลุ่ม Lactobacillus แต่ Bacillus Coagulans มีคุณสมบัติในการสร้างสปอร์ ซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ Bacillus Coagulansแตกต่างจากจุลินทรีย์ที่ผลิตกรดแลคติกตัวอื่นๆ และด้วยเหตุนี้ทำให้เรามักได้ยินชื่อเรียกของ Bacillus Coagulans อีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า Lactobacillus sporogenes
