Big Question: How do things in the universe compare in size to the Earth?

Assignments Due

11/30 - Quiz: Metric, Scale, and Stars

11/29 - Signed Portfolio 10/25 to 11/21

11/29 - The Life of a Star or My Favorite Constellation (effort and academic grade)

11/20 - Scale of the Universe & Sci. Notation Practice WS using:

11/16 - Galaxy Zoo WS using:

11/14 - SI Prefixes Length

11/9 - Measuring Length Activity

Objectives

    • Identify common SI units and prefixes.

    • Convert measurements between SI prefixes.

    • Convert Scientific Notation into decimal and back again.

    • Associate metric prefixes with scientific notation.

    • Appreciate the relative size of things throughout the universe.

    • Describe the structure of the universe.

    • Describe the scale and distances between objects in the universe

    • Be able to describe the different types of stars and their physical properties.

    • Explain the possible life cycle of stars depending on their mass.

Warm-ups

11/6- On the shots fired by Greedo and Han on the front board, answer the following: Which shots are more precise? Which shots are more accurate?

11/7 - From Star Size Comparison HD - youtube.com:

11/8 - How do nanometer, micrometer, and millimeter size objects compare to a kilometer or bigger size objects? From video clip The Scale of the Universe - BI Science - Youtube.com

11/13 - Describe the limitations and capabilities of electron scanning microscope. THIS IS A BUTTERFLY! - youtube.com

11/14 - What are the three shapes of galaxies? Which shape is the Milky Way Galaxy (our galaxy)? (Old ES pgs. 582-584)

11/15 - Make a Venn diagram comparing galaxy and solar system. (Old ES 582)

11/20 - Look at the Star Color Table:

  1. According to the table, how are red stars different than blue stars?

  2. What are the 7 colors of the rainbow? (ROY G. BIV)

  3. There are very few really green stars. What color of star is there instead of Green? Why do you think so?

11/26 - Make a Venn diagram comparing Apparent Magnitude to Absolute Magnitude.

11/27 - Tape the H-R diagram into your notebook and then do the following:

  1. Put the title H-R Diagram above it in your notebook.

  2. Highlight or outline the sun with yellow.

  3. Highlight or outline the Blue Giant region in blue.

  4. Highlight or outline the Red Giant region in orange or red.

  5. Outline the area and label where White Dwarfs would be found on the H-R diagram.

  6. Rmeans sun radii or solar radius. Interpret the diagram: How much brighter and bigger than the sun is the smallest Blue Giant? How about the star Betelgeuse?

11/28 - List the following seven objects from LARGEST to smallest: Galaxy, Star, Universe, Supercluster, light-year, Solar System, Planet.

11/29 - Look over the objectives in the Study Guide: Metric, Scale, and Stars. Write down at least 3 questions you have about what could be on the quiz tomorrow.

- Tape the abbreviation list to the back cover of your notebook. Pick out 6 abbreviations you could use when taking notes or summarizing warm-up questions.
