Big Question: How are science words made?

Example:

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

prefix root suffix

Oste- por- -sis

'bone' 'space' condition

The two 'o's are connecting vowels there to make the word sound better.

Literally: the condition of having spaces in the bone.

Warm-up

Use Greek and Latin Word Parts to find the literal definition of the following words: (Scientific Root Word chart - biologyjunction.com)

  • (Oct 10) Astronomy, Cosmologist, Geomorphology, Pterodactyl (compare with bat of the order Chiroptera)

  • (Oct 11) Anthropomorphic, Exothermic, Bathymetry, Brachiopod

  • (Oct. 15) Geochronologist, Paleoecology, Lithography, Mitochondria

Objectives

    • Recognize common Greek and Latin word parts used in science words.

    • Create a unique word from Greek and Latin word parts and use it in a sentence.

Assignments

Group Root Flower - Finish in class 10/11 - Presented on Monday, 10/15

    • Make a flower with a root word from your Scientific Root Word chart in the center.

    • Draw or cut out five large petals, each with a word that has the root word as part of it.

    • Write the definition for each of the five words on a separate paper and paste it to the back of the root flower.

Make Your Own Science Word - Presented with Flower on 10/15

Each person will make-up their own science word. Requirements:

  • Must have at least one prefix, one root, and one suffix.

  • Must have the literal meaning of each word part.

  • Use the word in a meaningful sentence.

  • Put the full dictionary-like definition.

  • Put your name on the back.
