Pine Grove

[ community & school site (July 1, 1908) ] The Pine Grove School was often referred to as the Hagan School. Located on the north end of what is now the Johnson-Stripling road.

 

S. A. Hendry and family lived northeast of Perry between San Pedro and Pine Grove communities.

 

Annie Blue Blanton attended school at Pine Grove and went on to become a teacher. At her retirement from teaching she was a teacher at Pine Grove School.

 

Lettie Wheelus attended Pine Grove School and later taught at Deer Palace School and Boyd School.

 

J. T. Aman operated a general store at Simmons and later at what became known as Holmes Still crossing on the South Georgia Railroad. He was remembered also as having operated a grist mill. Many of his decendants lived in the Pine Grove area.

 

Sarah Shiver King and her brothers and sisters lived with their parents at Cooey Island located about 12 miles west of Perry on the Fenholloway River. The youngsters attended Bee Tree Pond School south of Hampton Springs, from 1922-1925. Sarah remembers A. H. Wentworth and Penn Brannen as two of their teachers in the one room school. Later they attended Perry school and Sarah graduated from TCHS in 1933. Sarah took the teachers exam and was certified to teach in county schools. Her first position was at the one room Econfina School in Gibson's Pasture where she taught for two years. She next taught at Pine Grove School.
