Scanlon Methodist

Scanlon Methodist Church

Scanlon was a logging camp of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company. It was located in the southwestern part of Taylor County about nine miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

Rev. D. Lee Jones, preaching at Fenholloway in 1926, went to preach in the school house once a month. Rev. C. H. Cole was the presiding elder of the Tallahassee district at the time.

In the summer of 1927 Rev. J. M. Watts came to hold a revival here, and he and Rev. Jones organized the church. There were about seventeen charter members, several of whom were: Mrs. A. H. Allen, Mrs. A. H. Collins, Mrs. A. L. Applewhite, Mrs. S. A. Attaway. The church  school was begun with Mrs. Collins as superintendent.

Services were still held in the school building until 1928 when under the pastorate of Rev. Gilbert the church building was erected. Mrs. A. H. Collins went several times to see Mr. J. S. Foley, an executive of Brooks-Scanlon about building a church. Mr. Foley agreed to erect the church with the provision that the people furnish it and that it be a community church building so that all denominations might use it for worship. The building was completed on September 20, 1928.

Rev. Gilbert successfully served the church until 1930, when the conference sent Rev. W. W. Robbins as pastor. Rev. Robbins after serving one quarter went to another place which was better for his wife’s health. Rev. P. K. Rowell came to finish that conference year, but was taken ill and died just as the second quarter was ended. His death was regretted by all. Rev. J. M. Watts came after Rev. Rowell’s death and successfully completed the conference year.

Rev. J. W. Wyrick came to serve us in 1931 until 1933 when Rev. J. A. Cullifer served two years after which Rev. Champion served one year and then retired from the ministry. Rev. J. A. Cullifier came back in 1936 serving another year. Rev. Wm. L. Windsor was sent to this charge in 1937.

The Sunday school has improved and grown considerably. The first Vacation Church School was held in July of 1937. A Missionary Society and Epworth League have been organized

note: Not sure when this church disbanded but the post office at Scanlon closed and moved to Perry in Dec. 1941.
