Jug Island

[ beach community ] Pearl McCall Kelly said she didn't know who owned Jug Island, but the first she remembered to stay there was Donald Russell and his father. My uncle Oscar Bodiford and wife Myrtle lived there at one time. Henry and Headie Towles Hagan, bought it and built some houses to rent. Jug Island was a port for the sponge fisherman from Tarton Springs. But this is not how Jug Island got its name. That happened when a careless sailor was unloading whiskey sent from Cuba during the "rum runner days" and prohibition. He dropped and broke a jug. From that day on, the Island was called Jug Island.. and for years the broken jug sat there!

A Asher and Adams Atlas dated 1865, identifies Jug Island along with Rock Island, Pt. Edward and Deadman's Bay.
