New Hope Methodist

By S. S. Houck

Douglas Calhoun gave a deed in 1878 for a piece of land for the church and cemetery purposes. It is located about eight and one half miles south of Perry near US 19. It was once known as the Warrior Settlement.

Some of the oldest members assumed to be some of the charter members are: John R. Kelly, David Houck, F. M. Houck, Andrew W. Hendry, David F. Gamble, Anna M. Calhoun, Mrs. M. L. Houck, Mrs. C. E. Kelly, Charles A. Kelly, Mrs. M. J. Weaver, Mrs. M. B. Kelly and Mrs. F. M. Houck. Some of these members moved to Fenholloway shortly after the Fenholloway Church was organized.

In those days of long ago, the people would take two days of each month on Saturday and Sunday to worship. They would drive ox carts and wagons to church. They would fellowship with each other when they arrived and during worship they would shout with a heart full of religion.

By 1909 the church building at New Hope was badly decayed and so Mr. Green B. Weaver collected enough money to build a new church which remained in use for about another forty years when the church was closed in 1939. The cemetery is still being used and kept up. It is located on US 19 South.
