Tafelberg Gully Route

MM Cederberg Tafelberg Gully Route

The Cederberg Tafelberg is the second highest peak in the range with 2 summit beacons at 1964 and 1968m respectively. NB this is a difficult peak to climb and the Gully route at grade 'B' is the easiest way up. The final section of the route involves an exposed and awkward step over a gap onto the smooth waterchute at the head of which the chain can be used to get up the strenuous and slippery vertical finish. The descent is even more tricky and this route is best done with an experienced leader.

Access is usually from the Welbedacht parking area off the road to Driehoek Farm, and as it is in the Cape Nature Reserve a permit should be obtained (often easiest at the Algeria offices as they can advise on current conditions).

A day trip is strenuous so most parties will want to overnight in one of the caves at Welbedacht, Spout, or Panorama.

NB Water is often a problem and either carry sufficient or be sure to know how and where to find it. Hygienic Toilet practice must be observed as especially Welbedacht cave is overused and the water supply must not be compromised so walk around to use the area behind and above the cave.

If the slideshow does not work automatically click on the 3 vertical dots and from the drop down window click 'Auto play' and from the options select '5 seconds' and 'loop' then click 'Play' at the top of the window. If the slideshow is working and you want to stop to go back to look at something, such as read the page of description, then use the arrowheads either side of the slide number.

A good map is recommended such as Slingsby's one of the Southern Cederberg.
